PSU Upgrade

Hi, im looking to upgrade my Power supply for my Dell inspiron 3847. The current PSU is 300w. Im looking for a PSU that has between 350-500w. No more than 500.

Any recommendations?

The Dell Inspiron 3847 Mini Tower can use generic ATX power supply units, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch.

You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.

Note: You require a power supply with four SATA power connectors.

Best to buy a power supply with a depth of around 5.9".

Similar to the following PSU:

It would help if we knew why you wanted to upgrade?

For a higher end graphics card? If so, which one?

For something else? if so what?

What is your budget?

Is energy efficiency a consideration? For example if this will be running 24x7 and you live somewhere where power is really expensive, maybe we'll suggest a higher end PSU that is more efficient.

Here is a rock solid PSU, 520 Watts, 80 plus bronze rated, on sale at the new egg, with a $20 rebate.

You say you don't want more than 500W, but at this price its a steal.

I'm not 100% sure it will fit, but sorry, I don't know the dimensions of a 3847 PSU.

Unless you step up to the fanless high-end PSUs I think the sub-500W PSU market is somewhat void.

an efficient 520W may use the same as a 450W in the lower power ranges so I'd look at quality, reliability, efficiency and price.

good luck.

If the 4 pin plug you need is molex, and if you have a spare SATA power connection you can buy an adapter for less than $5.

Hi, it's because ive bought a fan controller for my pc who requires a 4 pin plug

Is an adapter safe? It's a NZTX sentry 2 by the way. Would the adapter be able to support this? I only intend on controlling 2 fans by the way

Thankyou very much for your help. Id also like to add that i have a gtx 1050 in my pc, rather than the gt 705 which my pc started with. Would adding the fan controller cause any problems, as im already pushing the psu slightly with this gpu

The adapters are perfectly safe. If there is any limitation it is on the PSU side. If there is spare SATA power port then I think the power draw of another HDD or a second optical drive will be less than the power draw of the controller plus the fans.

I would double check the specs, but I think it should be fine.

I'm not familiar with the specs on your PSU so I can't really give an answer.

My guess is the fan controller uses very little power, and the fans might use 1 to 3 watts each.
