I'm the only FM long time member on these boards and I'm well aware of the secrets of 3DMark and what is more important, and while they say CPU is more imporant in 06 the GPU is still the ruling factor, they said in 05 the CPU mattered more when it really didn't.
95% of the benchmark is GPU dependent, and I know the P4/PD gets lower score than the A64, the A64/X2/FX processors can deliver higher FPS and scores than the P4 based CPUs anyday, and the PD is just a dual core P4. I'll wait until Conroe comes to upgrade my next Intel processor, which will be a powerhouse CPU for gaming and 3D applications.
My X1800XL is the second best in class for a P4 (losing only to a P4 3.8Ghz, same clock GPU), I score higher than most X1800XT 512mb/P4 rigs and they have higher clockspeeds on the CPU and card, mainly a reason they score lower is because they're just straining the hardware and it's working harder than it has to, and causing lower scores, all the 3DMark series has a sweet spot for a clockspeed setting.
And you seem so paranoid of DRM, well get over it really, because you're going to eventually have to upgrade and that chip will most likely have DRM, and if you upgrade to Vista well then just put up the white flag.
I'd rather stay away from NV right now anyway, if 3DMark and SLi is all you care about, by all means go ahead and get nVidia, Ati has had higher IQ for a long time now and better game performance, not to mention to ability to use FP16 blending HDR + AA in games and no shimmering in textures such as that which plagues NV cards, which is a reason I didn't go with the 7800GT. Believe me I would have got it if it weren't for the shimmering bug, but I stuck with Ati, and with new Catalyst on the way the R520 and R580 architectures will have plenty of tweaking and performance gains to go through thanks to the new ring bus memory architecture.
