Power supply

I have a dell inspiron 530 and the power supply is going bad.  The one I have is a AcBel pc6037.  300w.  Do I have to buy the same power supply or could I buy any power supply?  Does it have to be 300W or could I install a 400W?

Any help would be great.

Thank you

If you are budget minded, you might look at one of these:

I have been able to pick up two of these on sale at different times at newegg.com for $30 shipped.  I just installed one in a Vostro 220, and my son's computer has been running one for over 6 months with no issues.

You can buy any standard ATX 12V power supply.  I would recommend buying a good name brand unit, however.  I have an Antec 500 watt in my Inspiron 530.  The one I have is no longer available though.  I would look at Corsair power supplies if I were you.  THIS ONE is very popular.

Hello, I have an Inspiron 530s also. I was wondering what kind of symptoms you were experiencing to let you know your power supply was going bad?  My computer on occasion right after boot-up suddenly shuts down.  Sometimes it restarts by itself and sometimes not.  I have run the Dell diagnostics and it has indicated no problems.

My problem was not with my power supply.  I thought it was but one of my lamps got to hot and melted causing a short there for causing my pc to shutdown.
