Problem with a DVD Drive - Code 39 - Dell DXP051(XP)
Have an old (2006) Dell DXP051(XP) that am using as a weather station base and have started having problems with the DVD Drive – get this message when go into System and click on it: “Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)” What caused this and more importantly how can I fix it?! Many thanks

jimryannz,
You did everything in that article and the issue still isn't corrected? If so you'll be the first person I've encountered that one of those processes didn't resolve the issue for outside of the few who had actual hardware failures.
Have you tried running the Dell diagnostics on the drive?

Thanks – will go back through it all again – sorry for the dumb question but how do you run the Dell diagnostics?!

You can run the Dell diagnostics by tapping F12 when the Dell Splash Screen appears as the computer is booting up. When the Boot menu appears, highlight the Diagnostics option and press Enter. Select Test System then Custom Test to get to a screen where you can select the optical drives in your computer.
