Question Concerning AMD Radeon HD 8690A Graphics Card

I am interested in the new Dell Inspiron 2350 with Intel Core i7 and AMD Radeon HD 8690A. However, when searching the web, I cannot find anything about Radeon HD 8690A but there is tons of info on the Radeon HD 8690M. Is is very disheartening that there is absolutely nothing on any of AMD's websites concerning the HD 8690A graphics card.

Are the Radeon HD 8690A and 8690M graphic cards identical? I only ask because Adobe confirms that newest version of Premiere Pro CC takes full advantage of hardware acceleration with OpenCL on the Radeon HD 8690M card. Is this also true of the 8690A?

I can't seem to find anything that is associated to 8690A too. They must have wrote it incorrectly.

Hi there,

I have ordered the Inspiron on the basis that it will be used for Gaming and specifically, video design inside Adobe After Effects and Photoshop. Both of these programs are Graphics-demanding, however with 12GB Ram and an i7 CPU, we shouldn't worry too much! In terms of gaming, the GPU is very important. I couldn't find anything about the Radeon HD 8690A, however there is a Radeon HD 8690M, and after a little Background research, i found out the capabilities are pretty high. Put it this way, your gonna be able to render in Premier Pro and other editing software very smoothly and easily, what with 2GB DEDICATED GDDR5 ram. Im not so sure if the 8690m is the same as the 8690a, however it's within the region of some pretty high GPU'S. PC coming soon so i'l update you then ;)

Greetings Community,

Thank you for your interest in the Inspiron!

I found some information on the card. I'll show you how I found it.

I went to the following link:

http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-2350-aio/pd

Once at the link, I scrolled down to the video card and clicked 'help me choose' then clicked on 'compare side by side'. Screen shot below:

The performance of the Radeon HD 8690M is similar to the GeForce GT 730M and GT 640M. I would in no way consider this a good card for gaming.

I'm sorry to see this issue unanswered after almost 6 months. I've ordered the AiO yesterday. When I get it, I'll do some benchmarks to assess it as good as I can, because this is ridiculous. Since september 2014, when I first checked it, I'm sure SOMEBODY has bought it. Unfortunately, I'm sure it's not really that good a gaming PC, otherwise Dell would have proudly mentioned it.

However, clearly, the ATI Radeon 8690A is not the same as the M, as the M has only 1Gb and the A 2Gb of GDDR5 RAM.

So I got the Dell, and I did some Passmark performance testing on it, comparing it with my old machine. It is a very fast computer, but it is, as expected, not that great when it comes to 3D graphics. And that's comparing it to a 3 year old laptop computer (with a good graphics card).

Summarized specs:

Dell Inspiron 23" AiO (!! apparently, this PC does not have the same specs in every country - mine has a 5400 rpm hybrid SSD for example, while the US version is 7200 rpm) - full specs like on order form below

The other PC is a BTO X-book 17CL36 with an ATI Radeon 6970M (2Gb), bought in 2011, with an Intel i7 2630 QM @2Ghz (see results) with 8 Gb RAM.

In the next two posts, I'll be pasting the results from the tests. One thing, however, needs to be said. The Dell AiO has an Intel 4600 Graphics chip AND an ATI Radeon 8690A. The ATI application manager decides when the card is activated, but application defaults can be set. I have tested the machine in a normal condition, with the Intel 4600 disabled (in device manager), and with the Performance tester set to use only the Radeon.

Loooong story short:

AiO Dell (2014) with ATI Radeon 8690A (2Gb), 3D Graphics mark by Passmark: 731.1

BTO X-Book (2011) with ATI Radeon 6970M (2Gb), 3D Graphics mark by Passmark: 2024.4

Which means, DON'T buy the Dell AiO for gaming or 3D applications.

After continued (though very fluent) photoshop use, the otherwise very very silent machine also starts to make noise. Further, NO complaints about this machine which is really great and superfast for regular Office work.

Results of Dell AiO using standard settings - apparently, the performance tester mostly uses the intel chip, resulting in poor performance

It appears that Dell decided to choke the card by putting it on a PCIe 8x slot and not a 16x slot, and having the memory bandwidth at 64 bit instead of at least 128 bit.

Is that derived from those tests?

I can't really confirm that in any way, I don't know enough about the insides. If there's any further tests I can run, please let me know. I'm happy to be of service, I wanted to know about it half a year ago already and I'm sure others had the same question in the meantime.
