Radeon 9800 PRO died in a 2003 XPS. Replacement Suggestions?
Hey all,
I have an old 2003 Dell XPS. The Video card (which I'm prett sure is a Radeon 9800 PRO AGP) decided to almost die yesterday. I will eventually pick up a new PC but does anyone have any suggestions on a potential video card to put in to replace this for the short term?
The part is listed as 6W523 Card, Graphic, 128MB, 9800 dimension under the service tag info.
I think somthing like the VisionTek Radeon X1650 PRO 512MB AGP or the Diamond X1650AGP256TSB ATI Radeon Viper X1650 Pro 256MB AGP GDDR2 Dual DVI Video Card would work (both of which I can at least find to buy) but I'm not sure. I don't want to spend that much since I'd rather use the money for a new PC.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

AGP versions of the Radeon HD 4650 are inexpensive and will be win compatable up to and including windows 7.
Your system will not rate higher on Experience index due to the CPU being less than 4.0 whereas this card is 5 out of 8.

Thanks for the tip!
I need to see if my power supply can even handle this. Doesn't the XFX Radeon HD 4650 require a 400W power supply?
I think the XPS systems shipped with either a 300W or a 250W power supply right?

If you look Carefully you will see that the 4650 uses LESS Power than the 9800 and does not need the
additional Molex power connections.
Dell 305w or better will work fine with this card.
200W and Slimline case would not .
You had a Radeon 9800 before so this should be a non issue.

Cool.
Thanks much for the info. The places I'd looked incorrectly stated that you needed a 400W. Off to order a 4650 I go!

Lots of makers put that requirement in there so that they have an excuse when it doesnt work.
However In both PCI-E and AGP the 4650 is Fine with Dell 305w or better system.
Newer Dells like the GX280 GX620 etc work fine with the PCI-E version.
Choosing the 4650 is based on Low Power, 128 bit interface, Windows 7 compatability, Directx9
and 320 stream processors., 32 texture units and support of DirectX 10.1 include
Unified Video Decoder (UVD) 2.0 for the treatment of HD video and HDMI 7.1 audio.
60W for 4670 and 50W for 4650. HD 4670 is somewhere between HD Radeon 3650
or GeForce 9500 GT and Radeon HD 3850 or GeForce 9600 GT / GSO.

My XFX 4650 AGP has a molex connector, although the card will work without it connected.
