Restore onto New HD with Win B/U on It

I have the Studio XPS 8100, 2 yrs old.

The SATA HD is clicking, so I have bought another drive - yet to come.

I am also 36 hours into a Windows image backup onto an ext HD, minus My Pictures which I can load later.

I need to know exactly how to proceed from here.

When the new HD arrives, do I put it in and format? Do I need to format? What exactly do I do to make it my C drive and put all the b/u on it with OS. I have none of the CDs it came with. Need a step by step please.

Why would the system image not replace all the OS files and drivers? I want to avoid having to install everything I have for the past 2 years, including updated drivers.

Hi phoenix132,

You need the operating system disk and driver’s disk to install it in new hard drive.

Please use the following link to request the OS and drivers Disks: http://dell.to/11KJ54i

The above link is for the US region. Please let me know if there is any difficulty in requesting the disk.

After receiving the disks and the new harddrive, connect the new harddrive to the computer and please refer this link to reinstall windows in the new hard drive: http://dell.to/ho6Eq2

After the operating system is installed, the drivers should be installed in correct order for proper functionality of the hardware components of the computer. Please use this link which shows the right order: http://tinyurl.com/8xvx6xy

Please reply for any further help.

Hi phoenix132,

While backing up or reloading image, if the registry files are not copied properly, it might as well corrupt the entire operating system.

This would not only compel us to reinstall the operating system, it might as well lead to data loss. Hence we always suggest a manual data back up and then a fresh reinstallation of windows.

I have given up on the backups. Something is wrong and windows will not start. So I removed the BU from the new HD with a format and tried putting Windows on that. Won't work either! I keep getting that same screen saying Windows failed to start.

36 hours for a backup? Something is wrong -- I can image over a 2tb drive in a fraction of that time.

I have been using Acronis TrueImage for my imaging chores for several years now, and it has been reliable. I have an XP install (as part of a multiboot) that was created for an Athlon back in 2004, and it's been imaged over to several different architectures since then, most recently a P67 Core i5.
