Service Tag Modification in BIOS for Dell Optiplex 960 & 7010

Hi Everyone,

Recently I have a motherboard that was replaced for Dell Optiplex 960, however the "Service Tag" or BIOS serial number does not tally with the chassis.

Currently the motherboard that was replaced was already prefixed with a different Service Tag, I done general research online and it was indicated there is no way to modify the service tag unless using a special utility for the modification.

Is there anyone that can assist with the modification of the "Service Tag"?

I would also need the methods for Optiplex 7010 as well.

Is there a way to "Short" something on the motherboards to clear the NVRAM?

Would clearing the NVRAM work as well?

OS: Win 7 32Bit

Thank you

The jumper labeled RTC_RST on the motherboard will clear the NVRAM.

1. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet

2. Remove the computer cover

3. Reset the current CMOS settings:

a)  Locate the password (PSWD) and CMOS (RTC_RST) jumpers on the system board. (The jumper locations on the mini-tower computers are shown in            the image above.)

 b)  Remove the jumper plug from its pins

 c)  Place the password jumper plug on the RTC_RST pins and wait approximately 5 seconds

 d) Remove the jumper plug from the RTC_RST pins and place it back on the password pins

Close the computer cover.

Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets and turn them on.

Is there anyone that can assist with the modification of the "Service Tag"?

Dell has a utility that will change the Service Tag. Perhaps Chris M. can assist?

Newer systems in the 960 or 7010 series do this in CMOS.  That's why later bios allow changing the tag 1 time only if its blank.  No utility just typing it in at the cmos level.  DCCU probably works with 960 but the 7010 and up is a totally different maker. There is no panacea one size fits all.

The dos based Service Tag utility ASSET209.COM is for very old units.

DCCU 3.XXX is required for the 960 etc.

http://ftp.us.dell.com/sysman/DCCU_3_1_1045.exe

Just installed DCCU it can adjust the owner tag but NOT the service tag.

You can use the Dos Asset tag utility to do this on older dells.

There are hidden switches to asset.com to change the service tag.

ASSET.com version 2.09 from the resource CD would be the likely candidate.
