Strong fan for Dimension 4700? Adding 2nd harddrive

I'm adding a 2nd harddrive soon and know the 4700 has some cooling problems. Can anyone recommend a heavier duty fan to use? Something quiet though.

If you replace the OEM fan, you'll have to live with a "fan failed, press F1 or F2 to continue ..." error.

You must use an OEM fan to avoid the error.

I can live with that.

Yes, please tell me. I want to keep my unit as cool as possible. Too many important things on it.

the oem fan, that came with your pc should be fine. the 4700 has a fan problem, that it is pointing inward instead of outward. make sure that it is blowing air outward, and you'll be fine. If you want to add an extra fan in the front, ill tell ya all about it, its easy, i did it to my 2400.

i would get a hdd cooler which would run from the psu, that way you don't have to deal with errors on boot due to changing the system fan

it has worked for my 2 drives

see pics from www.geocities.com/ravipcplanet/

i added a 80mm case pc fan from www.newegg.com, it connects DIRECTLY to the power supply. Remove the side panel and front cover of the pc. anyway, i used a rubber band to anchor it to the black thing at the bottom in the front in the case where the usb ports and headphone jack is. However, the rubber band breaks after a couple of months, and the fan will make a noise of vibration of improper anchoring. You can use Zip-Ties to anchor it down properly. IMPORTANT make sure that airflow is pointing inward. I wired it through the floppy bay, since i didnt get a floppy with my pc. power up the pc, and your good to go! Also if you have a seperate graphics card, one that isnt integrated into the motherboard, get a pci slot fan from newegg so that it pulls the air out from the graphics card out of the pc. any more questions, just ask.

I suggest not to put a second harddrive in the 4700. I've such a system myself and this machine has poor cooling facilities, which is mainly caused by a poorly designed lay out of the system and therefore a suboptimal airflow You're harddisk is probably already running at 65+ deg.C, whereas 55 deg.C is the maximum temperature a harddisk should run on. The addition of an extra drive will make this only worse (just open the case to see what I mean).

Below you can find a link which points to the speedfan website. You can use this to monitor your harddisk temperature.

the flaw in the 4700 cooling is the fan. dell put the fan blowing air in instead of blowing air out like it should be. Make sure the fan is blowing air out, and you will be fine. I did the same modifications to the cooling system of my friend's 4700 as i did for my 2400 and it worked beautifully. Enjoy the weekend!

adding a hdd fan dropped my temp by around 10c.. i took a dremel tool to my front case and now my hdds run at 20-22 so i guess the size of the air vent and fan both contribute to the temperature.. i see no reason why not to have a 2nd drive inside, just get a hdd cooler fan
