System freezes up on standby, help!

My XPS T550 has just recently started to freeze up when it goes into standby mode. I am getting tired of restarting my machine!! How do I fix this? I have already reinstalled the APM Drivers. Thanks Brian

The standby feature is not reliable. I haven't come across too many folks that have been able to use it with any consistency. Power Management is in your control panel is a better option but there are no guarantees that will work flawlessly. It wierd because standby and power management might work for months and then...poof, gone. You will probably just get a headache troubleshooting with Microsoft. Go with power management.

Then Microsoft will tell you that since Dell supplied
the OS they are under obligation to support it.

What crap.

Dell has now gone the way of Compaq, HP and
Toshiba. No support. No Help. Long hold times
and zero front end intelligent technical support.

I am about to call them to report how this machine
has frozen on shutdown from day 1.

No doubt they will blame an application program.

I don't care, I am just calling them so I can tell
my attorney I have done so. Per his request.

Good luck.

PS - you might try linux, it does not have these
problems.

It has been recommended by many here at this forum and other forums which I frequent that you turn off the power management feature in the BIOS and use the MS Power Management options from the Control Panel. Standby was initially set up for laptops and has not been fully integrated into desktop systems yet. The standby option is not reliable, as has been said above.

Secondly, any screensavers you may have running will more than likely interfere with power management settings. Get rid of your screensavers. You don't need them and they cause more trouble than they are worth, in my opinion.

I use the Power Management features to turn off my monitor and power down my hard drive ONLY. I do not use the standby settings at all. This works perfectly for me.

Hope this helps you with your problem.

Is there a "big" power consumption with just using APM and not stand-by mode??

Thanks Bob

I never bother about the power consumption as in my case a water pump in my fish pond is "ON" non-stop.

However, Dan is right. I don't use screensavers and I am ok with the Power Management settings. The moment I try to use the screensaver it work fine couple of days and suddenly I get an error message, particularly with the 'Flying Windows".

When I first got my Dell it was one of the first things I went to so I could power down at night. It doesn't work and that's with Screen Savers off. I just leave it on 24x7 no problem and use my screen Savers. I'm sure this will be figured out some day. Funny that's the only reliable thing which works on my Comcrap is to fall asleep and wakeup out side of that PWEEUE. Go figure.

It was my ATI TV Wonder that was keeping my XPS D333 from going into stand-by.

all is well now
