USB Root Hubs problem on Precision 380 repaired by Intel chipset driver R96614.EXE

I downloaded and installed Intel Chipset driver R114566.EXE that Dell marked as "Urgent" for the Precision 380 on Jan/20/2006.
(I was using Win XP Pro 2002 SP 2 on a dual-core Dell Precision 380 system which I believe uses the Intel 955X Express chipset.)

Before I installed this chipset driver my USB Root Hubs were working fine and my USB keyboard and mouse worked fine. After installing R114566.EXE all my USB ports were powered off at the momemt Windows XP launched.  They were working at first start of boot but when the Windows XP logo appeared on the screen, they were powered off and Device Manager showed 5 USB Host Controllers working but 5 USB Root Hubs with "yellow bang" because their device drivers could not be located.

The R114566.EXE driver was supposed to *fix* the "yellow bang" USB problem on USB devices.  In my case  it appears to have caused the "yellow bang" USB problem!

SOLUTION: I searched dell.com drivers for a Chipset driver specific to "95XX".  I found the Knowledge Base article "How Do I Install the Intel® 945P/955X/945G Chipset..." located at http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?docid=005BA7549855DF62E0401E0A551714DA

This KB article has a link for downloading Intel chipset driver R96614.EXE instead. I used that link to install R96614.EXE as a replacement for the suspect R114566.EXE.  Presto! The USB hubs were restored and working fine.

So it seems to me that R114566.EXE is really not compatible with the Intel 955X Express chipset inside the Dell Precision 380, and support.dell.com needs to remove Precision 380 from the list of systems compatible with that driver.

I must admit that I was curious why is Dell marking this as urgent and it massed up your computer.

Today curiosity got better of me and I vent to Intel website to find that their latest chipset driver is v8.1.1.1010 which is seven versions update from Dell latest urgent listings you are referring to.

I have ghosted my HDD, just in case. Downloaded the latest chipset driver from Intel. I have installed this chip set driver v8.1.1.1010 with no ill effects. To the contrary, I am surprised as it made my computer more responsive and faster (snappier).

Hope this helps someone in the future.
