Upgrade to video card on Dimension 4300

Hi folks! My first post and it's good to be here. I'm hoping to upgrade my video card on an (old) Dimension 4300. It's currently an Nvidia GeForce 2 GTS PCI and I'd like to replace it with one with 250 MB on board so I can play some games. I can't find a recommended substitute anywhere. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

Hi

Depending on what video card you brand you like ?  Most AGP video cards are backwards compatable.  I ran both a ATI 8500,  ATI 9800 Pro, and an AIW 9600 XT in mine with good results.  You dont want one of the power hungry high end cards,  to much trouble.  Find one you like, that does not need the extra power connection from the power supply.

I am assuming you only have a PCI Slot on your machine. Try the Geforce FX 5500 256mb PCI

The 4300 had an AGP slot, mine does.

Thanks for your help everyone. Mine is definitely a PCI slot. Maybe the UK and US are different specs. Thanks Andreychuk - I'll have a look at that card.

Do you have the 4300 or the 4300S?

Plain old 4300. Anyone know how much power my current card takes off the board? Seems it too old to have any listing for power specs but newer ones all need 250 watts or more.

ATI Offers an X1300 PCI video card, but it requires at least 300 watts. Some people have reported it to work in 250 Watts. It depends on the manufacturer and the voltage rails and the amount of stuff you have installed in your pc.

Thanks Andreychuk. Don't think I'm being clear here - I don't know if my current card needs 250 watts because I can't find a spec listing that includes that information.

What do you have for a processor and memory?  And which games do you want to play?  You can install the fastest video card in that PC but still not have enough horsepower to play the games that you want.

I have a 4300 and installed a 6600GT Video Card from Newegg.  It works great and was easy to install.  Mine is AGP and required a Y molex connector for the new card.  Your PSU should be sufficient/

The 6600 would be a good card as would a number of ATI cards for general computing.  But Farcry, what games are you now able to play?  And is your processor and memory the same as this gentleman?

RJRunde - Pentium 4, 1.80 GHz; 512MB RAM. I've been trying to play Doom 3. Doubtless that's a game too far....

Thanks Fullcry, I'll have a look at that. What's a Y molex connector?

I play Call of Duty UO and Call of Duty 2.  Both at medium to high settings and it rocks.

Those are some fairly demanding games.
