Upgrading an old xps 420 (Psu + Gfx)

Hello!

I got a dell xps 420 for like 2 and a half years now, still running fast and smooth though I want to upgrade to get the maximum permance of it and on new games coming out.  Was looking to upgrade my gfx card to ATI 5770 but I've been told that my psu cant handle it (375watts) since it requires atleast 400w.  I have also been told that you cant upgrade dell's psu's which make me hesitant of upgrading anything.  My question is, can you upgrade dell xps's psu's? If not, will my pc able to run with that new gfx without problems? if not, what are my other options?

Thank you.!

Dell hasn't used proprietary power supplies in full size desktops for years.  The power supply in your 420 is a standard ATX power supply.

THIS would be a good one, as would most on THIS Page. You should get a supply with at least 5 SATA power connector. And since you have an open back panel you can get a supply either with or without a on/off switch

Define affordable?

Go to www.newegg.com and checkout the Corsair and Antec brands of power supplies.

Can you recommend an affordable and decent power supply?

Take a good look at the specs as i noted one poster said it only comes with one PCIe power connector. This could limit your choice of cards.

Your system has 5 SATA connectors which would enable you to have 5 SATA devices so with 5 ports you also need 5 power connectors..

You have 5 SATA data ports on your mother board which means you could have up to 5 SATA devices be they either harddrives, optical drives. So you would need a supply that has 5 SATA power connectors.

As to the PCIe. Most of the higher end video cards today require 2  6 pin power connectors to connect to the card to provide the necessary power requirements. So your new supply should have a minimum of 2 6 pin power connectors. They are most commonly stated as PCIe power connectors.
