Video Cards with HDMI output - Query re Sound

I have a Dell Dimension 9150 running XP MCE 32bit.

If I replace the existing video card which has VGA and DVI with a video card that includes HDMI will I automatically get the audio through the HDMI?

There is no additional audio card other than the built in sound on the motherboard.

Thank you.

Cards with HDMI have a hardware audio codec on the Video card itself so yes you get sound from the HDMI but you have to set the preferences in windows to output the sound via that channel. This is often referred to as the Microsoft HD Audio Bus.  Most Geforce and Radeon Cards fall into that category. I am not aware of a card that DOES NOT have an audio codec on the HDMI port.  I would stick with earlier series however since the latest cards may not support xp.

Asus Radeon HD6450 is minimum I would recommend.

  • You may need to set the HDMI audio device as the default sound device
  • You may need to update your HDMI video card drivers for your version of Windows.
