Vostro 360 Buzzing Noise

Hi,

I got my brand new Vostro 360 yesterday so I manage to get it out of the box in the evening.

Unfortunately a very high pitched noise (but very faint and seriously annoying) was coming from the display. Whenever the display was off there was no more noise. Ah bliss. I checked everything and noticed that by default the monitor brightness was at maximum. Reducing monitor brightness reduced the noise. Setting the brightness to the middle reduces the noise to an almost imperceptible noise. I can easily hear it cause my house is very silent and I set it up during the night when it was even more silent.

This noise is actually unbearable after a while. Do you have any suggestions of what I should do? I am thinking about asking for a replacement but worried that this is a general fault by Dell and get a new one with the exact same problem. What do you think?

I would call Dell support and ask for a replacement.  Dell monitors are usually very reliable and good quality.  I've purchased six Dell computers in the past four years and haven't had any issues with the monitors.

Hi,

Unfortunately it is all bad news. I got a Dell Engineer to come around and look at it. He came and changed some components. The problem persisted so he came again and he changed the motherboard and since I was in a quite noisy area (near a construction site) the situation looked like it was solved. He left thinking that it was fixed by the motherboard (I thought that too). Only later in the day, in the quietness of the evening I noticed the problem still persisted. Haven't gotten back to Dell but I will.

It really annoying. Oh, have I mentioned that before sending the engineer around they sent me a new Dell with exactly the same problem? Well, they did.

Let me know if you get anywhere. I will also keep you up-to-date.

This is the all-in-one, so they would be replacing the computer. I hope that this isn't how these computers are. Kind of disappointing. Maybe I can trade for a different one.

Sounds like you can hear the inverter or power supply in the monitor. Other than getting a different monitor I don't know what you can do.

Oh know!!! This is my first PC and I am not impressed so far. I was hoping that I would be good with a Dell. Everyone that I work with has them and they work fine. I own a spa and can not have a high pitched noise going off all day long! I am tempted to pack it up and ship it back. Not okay.

Thanks for your quick response.

Hello guys,

I`ve had these problems with high pitch sound at brighter screen too.

A couple of days ago I`ve had display with little electronic plate (which controls the display i think) changed. Dell changes these things together as serviceman told me.

The new plate had new version number, and squeezing stopped.

As serviceman screwed everything up, the multitouch stopped to work :(

Next day the new display with new plate came to me with the dell specialist.

After mounting that, i hear high pitch sound a little, but only when rebooting system and at brightness lever above 70-80 % and it is a lot quieter than earlier so I will probably not be reporting this to Dell this time. Besides, now my display has much better backlight than previous two i saw at my place...

But... After these operations, sound went wrong. It`s OK with low volumes of sound. With higher volumes sound is chopped and "limiter" effect appears. With highest volume there is no sound in speakers at all. Headphones output works well so rear amplifier output. I think this is probably amplifer section of motherboard fault and I`m going to report this to Dell tomorrow.

It was speakers fault, not the motherboard.

It was speakers fault, not the motherboard.

How did you find that out? Any ideas why the noise got worse with brightness if all it was involved were the speakers?

Thanks for the info,

As I have written above,  the speakers strangely got blown off, and I was almost sure that it was motherboard fault, but it wasn`t. The speakers weren`t involved into that squeezing sound from the inside of machine. By the way, did you solved the problem with squeezing sound of your vostro ?

Oh ok, so the speakers were not the cause for the buzzing... oh well. Dell has my system and they are testing it to see what the problem is cause after several visits by the Dell engineer and practically replacing all the system components, the problem persists. Quite frustrating cause I am carrying this situation for 5 months now.

Strange thing with testing, I think they know what`s the problem is... I can tell you that I had similar problem.

SIlent buzzing sound. Guys from service changed display with little electronic plate, probably the driver of display with a little black coil. Original plate was ver. 1.2 or something. They came with new screen and new plate. The plate was ver. 1.3, so technician said Dell changed something in this unit.

They mounted everything and screen didn`t work for touch, but it was silent.

Next day they came back with new screen and it work well, it have the best backlight comparing to previous two screens. I hear silent buzzing sound with the contrast set on more than a half, but is a lot better.

I have to say that Dell has terrible quality control these days. Everything inside marked as made in china... Three displays and only one of them has equal backlight distribution (I have it already).
