What is the fastest cpu...

That a Studio XPS 9100 can take. Can it take an i7 980? If yes, is there any other adjustments needed to make it work?

The Core i7 980X (Gulftown) processor is supported.

Prior to installing the processor, check that BIOS version A04 is installed, when support for Intel new CPUs was added.

Cannot say for sure, but it should be, the specifications of the i7-990X are the same as the 980x, but it's not listed as compatible.

But, there's no way I would pay $600+ for a used processor!

The 980X is an old design, and it's expensive, too. Perhaps one of the Ivy Bridge or Haswell CPUs would be a better investment? (Of course, that would necessitate a motherboard swap.)

I own two Dells. My first is a Dimension 4600 that is nothing like it was when first purchased. I've upgraded everything except the motherboard. From the processor to the DVD drives. I even run Win7 Ultimate on it. My new one is a XPS 9100 i7-930, Nvidia GTX 650ti(was a 450), 16mb RAM(was 8), 2 Blu-Ray drives running Win7 Ultimate also. I'm loving the new one...the difference between the two is like night and day!:emotion-2: In the process of upgrading the 9100 (just up the ram. changed the video card and a Blu ray drive)...

Try a 3570K/SSD boot drive combo in the 4600. That will even the odds. :)

If you have made your upgrades on the XPS 9100 for gaming purposes, then the difference between the i7 930 and the i7 990x will make very little if any difference for this reason.  The $600 upgrade cost would go unnoticed.  The better upgrade will always be the video card when you already have an i7. Otherwise, as mentioned, get an SSD or even add an SSD cache drive for as little as $50.

I installed Crucial SSD cache drives, in my 2007 Inspiron 530 MT and a mid tower AMD X6 1090T BE desktop and they really helped to boost their performance.

I have no intention of paying $600 for that cpu or any other used anything lol! But thanks for the info.

Not upgrading for gaming, just to get the most out of the system before I replace it. SSD's are the next upgrades I do on both PC's, if possible.
