RE: Will an EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SC Gaming work with my Insipron 3668?

1050 TI as well as RX460  75w cards work in a 3650 with 240W power supply.  This video shows 3650 with Gigabyte Windforce RX460

possible solution:  the rx 460 has a new little brother, the rx550 that sips a mere 50w

According to the Dell Regulatory and Environmental Datasheet (downloads.dell.com/.../dell inspiron 3668,d19m,d19m003,dell regulatory and environmental datasheet.p... on page 5, the 3668 has 5 different power supply models all rated at 240 watts. My 3668 desktop came with model H240ES-02 (plugloadsolutions.com/.../DELL_H240ES-02_240W_ECOS 4616_Report.pdf)

This is a good efficient power supply and I have changed my mind about installing a GT 1030. The one I have is the EVGA GTX 1050 Ti (single fan) non overclock card. I will install it tomorrow and report back.

I also wanted to upgrade the GPU on my new 3668 as I’d bought this PC for my son for Xmas and expected him to play games from time to time. I checked with Dell and received the following:

You mentioned that you want to know the power output of your system's PSU

As per our records, your system Model INSP 3668 Desktop would output the following:

•APFC 240W power supply unit (220V/110V)

•NPFC 240W power supply unit (220V/110V)

As a result, I bought and fitted a Zotac GeForce GTX 1050 2 GB Mini Graphics Card and, so far, all seems well.

I realise that the 75w power requirement of the card could possibly cause problems but, having said that, Dell do supply the 3668 i7 version with a GeForce 1050 as an option. Can someone explain this?

Woody J,

Great that it is working. But I doubt that our Dell OEM (original equipment manufacturer) video card clock settings match the retail version. Ours are usually under-clocked.

Inspiron 3668 validated PSU =
GDWFH 240w, 100-240v, Mini Tower, NPFC (Non Power Factor Correction), Huntkey Electric Co Ltd
49P68 240w, 100-240v, Mini Tower, NPFC (Non Power Factor Correction), Acbel Polytech Inc

Inspiron 3668 validated OEM video cards =
24K8H Nvidia GeForce GTX1050, 2GB, DVI-D DL/DP 1.3 (1.4 Ready)/HDMI 2.0, 75w
J27RG Nvidia GeForce GT730, 2GB, VGA/DVI-D/HDMI, 30w
8CCF1 Nvidia GeForce GT1030, 2GB, DVI-D SL/HDMI, 30w
8MXMJ Nvidia GeForce GTX750TI, 2GB, DVI-I/DVI-D/MiniHDMI
1MPR3 AMD Radeon R9 360, 2GB, DVI-I/DP/HDMI

Hi DELL - Chris M,

I realise that I’m very likely showing just how little I know about PC hardware and the like, but does your reply indicate that the possible non-matched video card clock settings from the third party card I’ve installed could cause a degradation in performance? The PC is currently running like a dream. My main worry was the increased demand on the CPU but the above list indicates that one of the Dell validated cards also requires 75w, this on top of the additional needs of an i7 CPU (my 3668 uses an i5 CPU).

"degradation in performance", doubtful. My point was "if" the retail video card has higher memory and GPU clocks, it could push our 240w PSU beyond its capabilities.

Yes, I can see that (i.e. if the clock runs faster than the Dell GPU clock, the card would do more work, with a corresponding increased load). The ZOTAC card I’ve used has 2GB and, insofar as I know runs at nominal speed (1354Mhz) so I feel reasonably safe, certainly in view of the fact that Dell offer their own (perhaps underclocked, from your advice) 1050 GPU along with an i7, with the subsequent extra power needs of this CPU. Is my reasoning sound?
