Windows 10 1703 creator feature update

I have a OptiPlex 760 SFF, with 2GB ram and standard graphic card. Dell has stopped updating the drivers. Dell has not tested this model for above update. What do I need to replace for 1703, or will I need a replacement computer? As all ways limited budget, so looking for the cheapest way forward. I would prefer not to have go back to Win 7.

Hope someone can give me some advice on this problem.

Cheers, Digby

Hopefully you will not need to replace anything to upgrade to 1703, but there is no guarantee that 1703 will not break something. Microsoft has already blocked some computers from receiving future updates but has offered to continue security updates for some time. One example of computers not getting updates is computers with Intel Clover Trail processors. It is not practical or possible that people  replace their processors in order to get the update. Microsoft pushed Windows 10 on people that probably should not have upgraded in the first place, but as Windows 10 continues to "improve" more and more people with older systems will be left behind. Hopefully the updates will be smart enough to know which systems should not be updated instead of trying to update and failing in a endless loop. Good luck.

The 760 works fine with all versions of windows 10.  The standard INTEL and Radeon Graphics however are legacy so you would have to gp back to WDDM 1.0 vista drivers.  Not being supported does not mean that it won't work.

The only change I recommend is that you get a tower because towers use standard power supplies.

This is why all  re-sellers now selll Older dells with windows 10.

This does not address the original poster's  question which is "What do I need to replace for 1703 , or will I need a replacement computer?" The answer is hopefully he will not need to replace anything and that 1703 (Spring Creators Update) will work, but as of a couple of months ago only a little over 1/3 of Windows 10 users have been updated and the Fall Creators Update is coming next month. The roll out of 1703 has been slow relative to the 1607 (Anniversary Update) because of all the issues with 1607. So hopefully when the 1703 comes it will work, but if it doesn't then I am fairly concern the answer is not to buy a refurbished computer that is basically the same model he has now.

This DOES address the OP question.  1703 is not coming it has arrived.  I have a 760 tower and I have clean installed Windows 10 1703 and it works JUST FINE for EVERYTHING.  It does not work out of the box without downloading older drivers for chipset, INTEL RST,   DOT NET 2.0 3.5,  Directx June 2010,

WDDM 1.0 Vista Video Drivers for onboard as well as for legacy Radeon.   Radeon HD series 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000 etc including newer 5450, 6450, 6670, 7350, 7750, etc.   Windows 10 is directx 12 and these cards are directx 9,10,11.  Windows 10 WORKS FINE with GX620, GX740, GX755, GX760, GX780, GX790,  3010, 3020, 3030, 3040, 3050 etc.   When you get to a unit as old as 2006 Vintage GX620 there is the 32 bit issue unless you use AT LEAST Pentium D 915 up to D960 for the tower.   Smaller units cannot use 960 or due to power supply being smaller than 305W with a 130W CPU.

2005 was the transition Year when Intel started making processors with  NX aka Execute Disable Bit.   2006 was where pentium D went from Smithfield 800 series to Pressler 900 series.

Systems earlier than Smithfield will not install windows 8 or 10 at all.

Smithfield systems will install 32 bit windows 10 but not 64 bit due to

LAHF SAHF and CMPXCHG 16 being required for windows 8.1 and 10 before it will install.

So 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 Pentium,  PentiumII, Pentium3,  Pentium4 systems are stuck at windows XP max.

If they have ability for more than 2 gigs of ram and a GPU they will allow windows 7 to install but they will be VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY SLOWWWWW compared to a GX620 with Pentium D 915.

Home windows costs $119 and Pro Windows Costs $249.  Ultimate windows $399 aka windows 7 ulitmate has been eliminated.

Windows Media Center and Windows Movie Maker aka WINDOWS LIVE ESSENTIALS 2012 has been withdrawn.

Updating a system to Windows 10 REMOVES Directx 9,10 patches and drivers as well as removes DVD playback and Windows Media Center and many other features.

Smart people who understood that they needed to download WINDOWS live essentials 2012 before it was removed can put back most of those features.  Everyone else is out of luck.

This is also why older USB and PCI and PCI-E tv tuners and video capture cards and FIREWIRE capture cards STOP WORKING with windows 10.

So there are specific issues that can or in some cases CANNOT be addressed but overall basic clean install Windows 10 1703  works fine for most all Dells of the 2006 or later vintage.  Using AGP DDR systems that DO NOT HAVE PCI-E video slot is not recommended but not impossible.  (Its just that a GX620 or better tower WITH WINDOWS 10 pre installed) is going to be Light Years faster than these older legacy systems.  I don't think or hope that these systems work and are fine.  I know they work,  been there done that.

Microsoft still has not pushed out 1703 through automatic update to over 1/2 of Windows 10 PC so for those PCs 1703 has not arrived. I had 3 PCs running that were running 1607 and only one has gotten 1703.

Obviously your definition of works for everything is not the same as mine. If I have to revert to legacy or older drivers I may be giving up some features or solutions to problems the new drivers are intended to solve. You cannot assume everyone has a system with hardware, software, and peripherals identical to yours, so working for you may not work for them.

Your obfuscation does not change the facts.

"Microsoft still has not pushed out 1703 through automatic update"

I never said they did.  What I did say is that today and weeks ago you can download 1703 media and CLEAN install 1703 and EVERYTHING WORKS.  This is what the OP asked. The answer is that it works FINE and does not need updated drivers.  Therefore hardware doesn't need to be updated.

You have to use legacy drivers because WINDOWS 10 Drivers WDDM 1.3 DO NOT EXIST and will never exist EVER. WDDM 1.0 vista drivers are all that will EVER be available.

These systems were released with XP or Vista.  Not windows 7 or 8 or 10.

Nothing needs to be updated or replaced.

You said "1703 is not coming it has arrived"; well it has not arrived if you have to get it yourself. Also I think you misunderstand the OP. He must be running Windows 10 (1607) when he said " I would prefer not to have go back to Win 7", so he is not doing a clean install but anticipating an update to 1703.

You seem to focus only on the base computer when you declare everything work fine, but people have applications and peripherals that may not be supported. You can't claim that all these applications and peripherals will work fine because you have no idea what they are.

I hope that the OP does not have any problems but I am not going to lead him down a path that says everything is fine, just do it. People post here looking for help, but it is not helpful if you offer advice without pointing out potential problems.

people have applications and peripherals that may not be supported. This is true for All versions of windows starting with VISTA, 7, 8, 8.1, 10.  Not supported DOES NOT MEAN not working.

(And which would those be specifically? People, thats vague, applications thats very vague, peripherals, thats vague as well. If they don't work with 1703 they likely dont work with 1607 or 1511 for that matter.) Again you post irrelevant information that I did not state.

The other reason some things don't carry forward are based on Spec such as PCI 2.0 vs Universal PCI 2.2 and the problems with PCI-E 1.0 and 2.0  vs 2.1 and 3.0.

You can't claim that all these applications and peripherals will work fine because you have no idea what they are.  (Actually I can because while its impossible to prove a negative its possible to say that your statement is false based on your inability to tell me exactly what is not working.) Furthermore the OP didn't ask about applications and peripherals he asked about the 760.  And he's running windows 7 and perhaps windows 10 of some version I would think at least 1511.

I don't need to tell you doesn't work after the Creators Update. You can see for yourself, just Google search "not working after Creators Update". You can even be specific and Google "Dell not working after Creators Update". There are even examples in the Software & Operating Systems section of the Dell Support Forum.

The OP's 760 is not divorce from his applications and peripherals. You can't tell him that everything is fine on the one hand than start warning about "not working out of the box" and the need for legacy drivers, etc.OK, everything is fine, just but you have to do this and that.If I had do these things it would not seem fine to me, it would seem I am going backward.

That nonsense.  " "not working out of the box" and the need for legacy drivers" applies to ALL dell units

that were released before windows 8.1 and 10.   Not supported does not mean not working.

You mentioned people and then applications and say its not working but cannot come up with specific examples of Optiplex 620, 745, 755, 760, 780, 790 etc that are "not working after Creators Update.

I do not have to prove a negative.  It works fine.  You must prove a positive not working.   I hope everything is ok is not the same as I OWN THIS SPECIFIC SYSTEM and EVERYTHING works fine.

AMD has recently made ALL Radeon HD series Legacy.

HD1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000 series.

What this means is there will not be any further updates for this card series and the Latest and Greatest Driver will NOT WORK or be recognized.  Legacy does not mean not working.  It means that for Specific Directx 9,10,11 cards there will not be Directx 12 drivers and there NEVER Will be.  This also means that the Auto Detect utility no longer works for these older series cards.

We are all here to try to assist the OP, not argue or attack each other. The nine year old Optiplex 760 was never supported by Dell with Windows 10.

All of your statements should have included that before discussing what might or might not work if the OP tries to install Windows 10. You could say, "Although never supported by Dell, other users have stated...". Then link to other users who actually installed Windows 10 on this model. Showing other user threads who actually post their results of installing Windows 10 on a non-supported model has more weight and can support your opinion.

I own an Optiplex GX760 and have dirty installed and updated as well as clean installed windows 7,8,8.1, as well as 10  version 1511, 1607, 1703.   There  are no issues.  Everything works.  I don't need to hope there is nothing wrong.  It works.  Its repeatable, its consistent.  There are no issues.  No problems noted with GX620, 745, 755, 760, 780, 790 etc.  Not supported is not an issue and never has been. The specific Legacy Drivers work fine because they are at least WDDM 1.0  The original OS on my 760 from Dell was Windows Vista.

The OP question was do I need to update anything for windows 10 1703.  The answer is no it works fine.

There are WDDM 1.1 Windows 7 drivers. The AD198x sound is supported by Microsoft.   They havent updated it to 10 yet but it was XP, then Vista then 7 then 8 support.   Analog Devices the maker of this codec stopped supporting it in 2006.

Thanks, Chris M. As for stating that the Optiplex 760 was never supported by Dell with Windows 10, I should have stated that, but I didn't think I had to because the OP stated that Dell has not tested the update on that model. I think the OP is worried about what he is getting himself into when he asked about things that need to be replaced, but each new update of Windows 10 brings unknowns and new challenges.

Agreed, these updates have been the cause of many issues and we are playing catch up. And we do appreciate any and all help you all provide out here.
