Many thanks for the answer, not concerned about IE, patches or security. Its to run as a stand alone system to run a fire alarm system through a serial port, no ethernet connection required. Only issue is getting the serial port functioning - or even finding one!!
There is no more Windows 2000 support. Its End of Life. There will be no Windows 2000 patches or updated drivers etc. No I3 etc. This is a non starter. Support for Windows 2000 ended on July 13, 2010!
You will not be able to get New Items with Warranty that Run Windows 2000. There is no more vendor support for WINDOWS 2000, Drivers etc.

That would place the Workstation at Optiplex GX280 around 2006 as the last version of hardware that has WIN2000 Drivers.
Internet Explorer 6 SP1 would be the last version of the browser.
Thanks SpeedStep, yeah i know its not supported, just interested to see if anyone has tried? I have to try anyway, just looking for the best possible hardware platform to put it on,

The GX260 would have a built in Serial port.
The GX280 requires a specific Daughter board with 20 pin ribbon cable.
Dell PN F3636 specifically 4 GX280. It is an add-in slot that contains both a keyboard and mouse ps/2 port, and a DB/9 serial port.
