Windows 7 on Dell Dimension 8400?
Hello! I have a Dimension 8400 still running Windows XP. I would like to upgrade to Windows 7, but when I run the Windows 7 update advisor, it says that Windows 7 doesn't support my Radeon x300 series graphics card driver. I would like to know if there is a driver compatible with this, and if so, where can I download it? And is it possible to upgrade to Windows 7 without a driver for the x300?
Thanks in advance!

The X300 doesnt support windows 7. The good news is that a Radeon 6450 works fine.
The GX280 and the dimension 8400 are basically the same thing.

Its more economic to buy a second hand OptiPlex 780 or 760 with a Dell Windows 7 OEM license than to buy a System Builder OEM license and install it on the Dimension 8400. Moreover the OptiPlex 760 or 780 will perform much better than the 8400.

Newegg regularly sells Home Premium for $70, and it comes with an install disk should reinstallation be needed.

FYI--the Dim 8400 cpu is not 64 bits capable. It can run Windows 7 but it must be 32 bits. I had it installed on my 8400 before giving it away. I agree that buying a newer computer would be better.

As mentioned you can also find an OptiPlex 760 (or perhaps 780) for that price with a Windows 7 OEM license on the likes of eBay.

Even Walmart Carries Newer Optiplexes with windows 7. Lowest machine I recommend is GX620 With Pentium D because they can use Pentium D 900 Series they will run windows 8.1 or even 10.
The Recommended Radeon card works in ALL Optiplex and Dimension models EXCEPT USFF because they do not have slots.
Getting a PCI-E single slot wide SILENT Fanless card is not a bad investment because it can be carried forward to any newer model.
I recommend MINI TOWER models over others because the power supply can be easily replaced if it ever fails and the variety and power of the video cards and expandability of the RAM is much better.
