Windows Server 2008 on Dell Precision T3400

I have installed Windows Server 2008 on my Dell Precision T3400 workstation. All seems well except Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation mark for SM Bus Controller. This is notice that the chipset driver is not loaded.

Dell Technical support tells me Windows Server 2008 is not supported on the T3400 and I am on my own. 1) anyone with experience with Server 2008 on a T3400? 2) Opinions welcome concerning use of the Vista chipset driver with Server 2008.

Thanks!

Hello,

Server 2008 runs OK on a T3400. You can get compatible chipset drivers from Intel.com. I believe the X38 chipset has been used in very entry level servers. You'll struggle to get compatible graphics drivers though not that matters much on a server anyway!

There is a long delay when Windows is loading intial drivers on startup which I havn't got to the bottom of yet but once it's past that it seems OK.

Thanks for your reply. I finally tried the Vista chipset driver for the T3400 and that seems to be working OK. Other user's groups tend to think this will be fine. I wish Dell would hhave made an effort to help me with what seems like a simple fix.

They want you to spend more for a Server grade product, rather than a multipurpose workstation.

Server works fine on the T3400.  I am using Windows Server 2003 Enterprise on mine for a while without any problems.

The SMB bus is a common issue that Intel has drivers for.  Search the Intel site for X38 inf and DL the drivers for Vista- smae as Win Server 2008.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but how did you exactly get server 2008 to install on your t3400? I've tried several sata drivers and I keep getting 0xc0000359 iastor missing or corrupt error... I am totally at a loss....

Windows server 2003 uses XP drivers.

Windows server 2008 uses VISTA/WIN7 Drivers.

64 bit versions of windows 2008 server will REQUIRE signed drivers.  If said drivers are NOT signed then you will REQUIRE to do F8 DISABLE Driver Signature enforcement EACH AND EVER BOOT FOREVER until you get signed drivers.

Server operating systems ARE NOT SUPPORTED OR VALIDATED on T3400 Workstations.

In order to install it may REQUIRE using ATA Mode and then installing the INTEL STORAGE Matrix Drivers

for SATA AHCI mode and running the patch from Microsoft.

Intel Matrix Storage Manager for VISTA/WIN7 64 bit  It is used to install or update the Intel Serial ATA (SATA) Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) Controller Driver.

Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

I got it to work a long time ago. We have moved to Win 7 Professional, just didn't need AD and all the sys admin overhead. It was 32 bit 2008 on a 32 bit machine at least 3 years ago .I remember I spent some time getting the HD drivers right. Sorry I can't be more help.

Thank you for the input speed... My problem is I don't even get that far... I get the BSOD with the iastor error 0x0000359 that's why I was interested in wfannings post stating that he got his to work. Was wondering if he and did he incorporate drivers with vlite or something like this. This is by no means a production server just more to feed my curiosity. I can get it to work with serv03 no problems just 08 r2. Thank you again :-)
