Windows XP restore
I have a Dell Dimension 9150/XPS 400 that died. I have a new Dell computer. I would like to restore the Dimension 9150 enough to salvage files (photos,
documents, etc.) that are on the hard drive.
I found the following on the Dell Support page:
If I use Method 2 and, as instructed, run C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, will I be able to get my access to my filles so I can salvage them on a flashdrive? We once re-installed the OS from the initial disk after a crash (foolishly) and thereby lost all data. I am deathly afraid of that happening again. Can anyone reassure me? What will happen when I run C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe?

Does your new Dell have enough ports and power to accommodate a second hard drive? If so, I believe I would not bother trying to resurrect the old computer. Instead, I would attach the hard drive from your XPS 400 to one of the available SATA ports in the new computer, plug power into it, and copy the necessary data to the drive in your new computer that way. Attempting to get the old computer running again may present risks to the hard drive containing your photos and other data.
You may find that you need to take ownership of the folders and files you wish to recover from the old hard drive. This article should help in that case: Troubleshoot "Access Denied" When Opening Files or Folders

Thanks for that quick reply, JackShack, but I am afraid it is over my head. (I am obviously not a techie.) How do I "attach the hard drive from my XPS 400 to one of the available SATA ports in the new computer"? The hard drive of my XPS 400 is located inside the tower. Would someone need to take my old computer apart? Where are the SATA ports in my new computer? Inside the tower? Outside? How is a hard drive from one machine "attached" to a new machine?

It depends on the model. May we ask it?

Hi,
The hard drive from/of the Dimension 9150/XPS 400 has to be connected in parallel with the hard drive in the Inspiron 620ST.
Before you begin, please shut down and unplug all the cables from both the computers.
NOTE: Press and hold the Power Button for a minute to discharge the static charge on the motherboard. Perform this step after disconnecting all the cables from the computers. Perform this step on both the computers.
The following are the links for the service manuals of respective computers.
XPS 400:

Dimension 9150:

Inspiron 620:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insp620620S/Insp620s/en/sm/index.htm
Remove the computer cover of the Dimension 9150/XPS 400. Perform the steps mentioned in “Removing a Hard Drive” as mentioned in the link below.
<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
Now, this hard drive has to be connected to Inspiron 620 in parallel with the original hard drive of the computer. Open the computer cover of the Inspiron 620 following the steps in the link below.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim9150/en/sm/cvrop.htm#wp1053342
Please connect the hard drive using the SATA cable. One end should be connected to the hard drive and the other end to any other idle SATA port on the motherboard.
Once the hard drive is connected, ensure that all the cables are reconnected to the Inspiron 620.
Power on the Computer, data can be backed up now.
Please let me know if this helps.
