Darik's Boot and Nuke is a free utility that will do the job.

Run DOS command from WinKey+R (or from a CMD window) , run the DOS command:

1. diskpart

2. list disk

3. select disk x

a. (where x is the disk number you want to wipe)

4. clean

(You can use "clean all", but this operation might take some time to complete. Use Task Manager to view the operation is using the disk as it's activity may be approaching 100%)

formatting and or partitioning is not enough and the data can be recovered even after a partition or a clean all.

The secure wiping tools overwrite the data multiple times so the data cannot ( or cannot within reason) be recovered.

for me personally, I don't donate hard drives I dismantle them, recycle most of the metal, beat the platter with a hammer and use the magnets in the garage.
