XPS 410 13 in 1 media card reader Teac CA200 Drivers and Firmware Update

OK is anybody as confused as me?
Got the tech update emails 1 week apart regarding the 13 in 1 media card reader installed on my XPS 410.

My card reader has been working fine so I wait a couple of days trying to figure out the features and benefits in the firmware update and driver update.   I see that the firmware would allow me to read SDHC cards so I decide to do the updates of Jan15.

Everything is working fine after the updates...cool little icons for the drives.  I now have SDHC capability.

Now I get updates on Jan 22 for the same thing.  Says it corrected a release error... sounds important.  It is recommended so I read the txt provided with the update and I see they have recalled the updates for a lot of computers but nowhere does it specifically list the XPS410.

So I go ahead and do these updates thinking that what they sent out on Jan 15 was problematic.

I get an dialog box saying firmware is the same version but the update continues to completion.  After the update no more cool icons, and I am not sure if it will support the SDHC card that I ordered on Jan 18 and have not received yet.

Can anybody shed some light on what is going on?  Should I go back and redo the orginal update of Jan 15th?  Can I do that?  Why does Dell send out so many update w/o a resonable amount of documentation?  Don't they know they are asking us to screw with our computers and problems may result that I would feel THEY are resonsible for?

thanks... feel a little better now... still would like to hear from the mods on this one!

I did the firmware update couple weeks ago, the driver update was for 64bit at the time, which I didn't have, It wouldn't install. Now I see the latest update you're mentioning and  the driver update is now stating 32 bit OS(only)?????? Boy! I see what you mean........ well I gonna install them when I get home form work, wish me luck. BTW, do you have 64 bit OS???? That's why you were able to install the driver update.

Roger1955 - that's another point I thought was so confusing .... not much help in figuring out what was 32bit and what was 64 bit.  I am sure it was obvious to the folks who do this day to day.

I am 32bit running XP naturally.  So the updates and firware I thought was really nice.  I was really happy when it all worked and I thought it was an actual improvement.  Now I feel like I don't know what I got.

I will likely go back to the first update after I get the SDHC card and try it out with the current state... whatever that is????

Here is a tip... be very patient with the updates.  Do them.  Wait.  Reboot. Wait.  Reboot again and then try it out.  There is a lot going on in the back ground and it takes awhile for the OS to catch up and reinstall the card reader.  I think people are bailing too early and that's why it didn't work for them initially.

I love it when you have to bump your own post to get some attention. Come on people, 73 visits and not another comment? I know somebody else out there is feeling a little cheated on this Tech Update. What has been your experience? Will your 1 year old XPS with a built in media reader read SDHC cards? Are you willing to roll over and just spend more money?

I was instructed by Dell technical support to download the "...Multi System, v.4.08, A03" driver onto my XPS 410 (Vista): http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R176603&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=240271

After running the download and rebooting my system, it was still NOT able to read SDHC. The tech rep told me I needed to buy a new media reader and then forwarded me to Dell sales.

The card is a 4GB Kingston microSDHC that was formatted in my cell phone. A picture and video was saved to the card and can be viewed in the phone. I'm going to call Dell support again to see if a different technician can help me get the new media reader driver to work.

I just finished speaking with another technician (this time at the XPS Premium Support desk). He researched the issue for about 30 minutes and concluded:

1) The recent driver update does not enable the media reader to read SDHC cards.

2) The media reader is not capable of reading SDHC cards. He recommended buying a small USB reader.

The techs are WRONG.
I finally got my 4GB SDHC card and it works in the 13 in 1 media reader.

I would download and install the first firmware update they sent out and not listen to tech support.  I would be  1000$ they have not even done the firmware update.

I guess they also suggested you buy the small card reader from Dell?

Please post a link to the driver. The one I downloaded doesn't enable SDHC.

After revisiting the issue, my XPS 410 now reads SDHC cards. The driver posted above works. I originally didn't complete the install process properly.

I had the same problem and now it is resolved, but the tech support person also told me it couldn't be fixed and recommended I buy a new card reader. He attempted himself to fix the problem by logging in to my computer, but had no luck. In researching the matter, I came across the text files that accompanied the updates. Notice the text "Cancelled;" in the second update. Which followed the first one by only a few days. My success, of course, resulted by only running the first update.

My system is a XPS 410, running Win7, 32 bit.

I had the same problem and now it is resolved,

Just applied this fix to a 2007 XPS 410 running Windows 7 (64 bit) and it worked like a charm.  My card reader now reads a 4gb SDHC card as well as the old SD cards that I had.  Interestingly, before the update, if I had that SDHC card in the reader, it would cause fits with my computer - slowed way down, would lock up, would not complete the boot sequence.  Glad that is sorted out and I hope this helps someone.  And thanks Topseeded!!!

Just search for R17539  -- came up for me.
