XPS 8300 and USB 3.0

Originally the XPS 8300 had an option to add a USB 3.0 card as a custom configuration option.  A few days ago this was removed.  I tried contacting Dell support to find out if there is a problem adding USB 3.0 to the XPS 8300, but they could only tell me that it was no longer and option (which I already knew).  Can a Dell support person tell me a) why USB 3.0 was removed as an option  b) is there some inherent problem with the XPS 8300 that causes it to not be able to support an added USB 3.0 card.

It does not seem like the chipset motherboard options should be related to USB 3.0 support, but the sudden removal of this option makes me uneasy.  I don't want to buy a new machine that cannot support USB 3.0 or has some inherent problem with USB 3.0.

I wonder does it have something to do with the only available PIC-e x1 slot being filled with a Sound Blaster card in some configurations.

Early reviews of the XPS 8300 had complaints about the built in sound so perhaps the dropped USB 3.0 so a sound card could fit in, as far

as I know it goes in the same slot.

We are users helping users with hardware problems, not Dell employees.

There is a what do I buy section, Maybe someone there can answer your question.  Click Me

Good question.  I noticed that too.

Unfortunately, Dell sales support only seems equipt to answer very generic question.  I was hoping that more senior Dell technical support people periodically monitored this forum, or that a non-Dell person had been able to ferret out some better information than I have been able to.  It seems to me that most technically savvy buyers would want to have USB 3.0 support in any new hardware they are purchasing.  I would hope that the Dell technical/sales team would be motivated to clear this up so that potential customers don't go elsewhere.

Now the USB 3.0 option is back.  However it adds a 13 day delay to the shipment time.  There has to be something going on here.  I wish Dell would clarify.

Wow, thanks for the tip.  I see it.  Yes it is a long delay.  I've been waiting for this option...

KevinGriffie,

Perhaps it was just a supply issue. The XPS 8300 does list this on the parts page so it must support it -
72YMW USB 3.0 Module (PCIe Card, Cable, & Cage)

I originally placed the order for an XPS 8300 with a USB 3.0 card on 4/4.  I was supposed to receive it on 5/6.  Now I am being told I will receive it on 6/20.  Could there really be a supply problem with USB 3.0 parts?  That seems strange to me.  I guess it is time to look at a different vendor and cancel my order.

USB 3.0 should be in the on board chip set like USB 2.0. The 8300 should be available with SATA III 6gb/s hard drives. Why should I buy a new PC with old technology.

Just my obversation/opinion - Dell often takes option items to and from the list based on availability.  In this case it appears they may simply have run out of USB 3.0 cards.  The 13-days would reflect the time to obtain more cards and reassemble from standard configuration.

Am i correct in saying opening the case and fitting a dell usb 3.0 card would invalidate my warranty ,i query this with live chat earlier and they say yes it would invalidate it....so its :( usb 2.0 or no warranty :( :(

Whoever told you that was wrong.  What would be true is that any added cards would not be covered under the dell warranty.  However if you buy the accessory from dell it is supported.
