XPS 8500 SSD At Capacity

I have a recently purchased XPS 8500 with a 256 GB SSD and a 2 TB hard drive.  The SSD is now nearly full with factory installed programs plus other user installed programs.  It is now 90% full and all new installs default to the SSD drive C.  The 2 TB drive D is only about 10% full, mostly with data and a few programs.

In this typical configuration that Dell is using, what happens when the SSD is full?  Should anything that is on SSD C moved to D?  Will future program installs and other need for capacity default to D?  What should normally be on the SSD versus the traditional HD for best use?

The computer is still running well and relatively fast.  I'm concerned that the above may cause a future stall or otherwise loss of normal use without some user or system intervention.

Suggestions?

Hi Wurlitzer165,

Everyone has their own method of organising how they set up programs on their SSDs and HDDs. Generally, SSDs are best for applications that you would prefer fast access (maybe as you use the applications very often) whereas HDDs could be used for applications that you don't use as quite as often or rarely.

Regarding program installs, usually when you run the program installation, you can choose to run a custom installation which will allow you to install the program to whatever drive and folder that you prefer. There are exceptions and it all depends on how the authors of the software you are trying to install have packaged the installation.

If you're concerned about your SSD running out of space, it would be advisable to remove programs that are installed on the SSD that you do not use often, if at all and then reinstall onto the HDD.

Hope that helps!
