XPS 8500 memory compatability

Just purchased a xps8500 I7-3770 W/  video card,hd7870,Win7pro  64 bit , 2tb/256HD,  presently it has 12gb of ram (2x4gb) and (2x2gb)  DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600mhz) in it .  I want  to max out the ram to 32gb (4x8gb) @ 1600mhz.    Need to know what 8gb/dimm moduels are compatable . All the ones I've seen are xmp enhanced  and  I dont have enough knowledge about compatibiity or if they will work . Is the motherboard on the xps 8500  xmp compatable. Does the bios on the xps 8500 have provisions for setting this type of memory (DDr3 PC3-12800 ) (XMP enhanced ) Dell is of no help they dont even offer memory 8gb/sticks for this new computer only 4gb/sticks which are not xmp type. However they do claim it is capable of 32gb max.  hopefull sombody has already completed this upgrade and can tell me what specific type ,style, and speed  they used to do this         thanks Mac

Rohe  I saw this  on  the crucial site  also but really didnt want to buy a slower speed menory ddr3 Pc3-10600 (1333mhz) when the xps 8500 is supposed to and can use ddr3 pc3-12800 (1600mhz) 32gb.   why would dell specify for use  ddr3-12800 ( 1600mhz) in a brand new model when this type of memory isn't available.....it doesnt make much sense to me..  Just trying to avoid buying the wrong memory initially or buying it twice. wouldnt surprise me if the memory spec are wrong also they screwed up the specs about  sata3 ports and raid  capibilities originally  only to recant because of alledged typos....unbelievable they taunt this model as the most consumer friendly and upgradeable but when you contact their parts/upgrade dept  no upgrades/or parts are available except 2gb and 4 gb sticks of memory you would think a simple memory upgrade would be a nobrainer

Dell PCs can be fussy about RAM so a lot of people on this forum buy it from crucial.com because they guarantee it works in the system for which they recommended it -or they take it back.

You can find pairs of 8-GB RAM modules for the XPS 8500 at Crucial, here for $160. Note: it's DDR3-1333 RAM, not 1600 . The only DDR3-1600 RAM Crucial currently seems to be offering for the XPS 8500 is their 2G modules. Don't know if they'll offer 8-GB 1600 in the future.

If you mix 1333 and 1600 MHz RAM, it will all run at the speed of the slowest modules that are installed. Don't know how much difference that will make in performance, or if you'll notice...

Dell's specs say it  supports 1600 MHz RAM. Do you know the speed of the RAM installed in your system? Is it actually 1600-MHz DDR3 RAM?

Do 8-GB 1600 MHz modules exist?

The XPS 8500 can support up to 32 GB of RAM but Dell is choosing only to sell it with 16 GB, at least for now. I suspect Dell isn't offered any 8-GB RAM (1333 or 1600 mMHz) because they're trying to keep the price "competitive" and 8-GB 1333 MHz RAM seems -to me- to be quite expensive at Crucial.

You might want to wait a bit until 3rd parties like Crucial etc offer 8-GB 1600 MHz modules. They'd more than likely be cheaper than anything you could buy from Dell. :emotion-5:

FYI - According to this thread, 8-GB 1600 MHz RAM is available from several sources.

DDR3 1600MHz PC3-12800 240pin DIMM is the memory (RAM) specification for your Dell Studio XPS 8500. Crucial (Micron Technology) is the best memory (RAM) producer for your purposes. All four of my computers (2 servers, 1 laptop, 1 tablet) use Crucial brand memory and I have never had a memory error.

I can tell you what does not work.

Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz

Part #: CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B

2 sets of matched pairs 4x4Gb

Timing: 9-9-9-24

It addresses all 16Gb; however will only operate @ 1333MHz.

Worked w/ tech support, did the BIOS update to AO5 w/ no success.

Dont really know....you know how finiciky dell motherboards can be about memory compatability....however what I do know...after 2 weeks and many hours on phone with Dell xps 8500 support   very confusing at best but one tech finally stated that dell had 8gb/dimms that just recently became  available that were compatable(Verified) with the xps 8500 configured with the Intel 3rd generation I7-3770 processor and Windows 7 Pro thus enalbling to maxout  memory to 32gb. So this is the dell P/N that I ordered   4 sticks DEll P/N A5764358  Dist SKU  SNP66GKY/8GX1  Mfg P/N SNP66GKYC/8G  The 32GB (4X8GB) arrived today..When I looked in the package the memory that they sent was  Samsung  8GB 2Rx8 PC3-12800U-11-11-B1  (1x8GB) X4

Samsung P/N M378B1G73BHO-CKO   I don't know why they were individual sticks and not matched pairs but they are supposed to be dell verified...  I havent inatalled this upgrade yet so time will tell....Once completed I will post of sucess or failure..  You can also google Intelldesktop board DH77EB for more spec about system memory I'm not 100% sure that this is the motherboard in the xps 8500 the only other thing I do know about motherboard is that it does not support Double sided X16 dims... For the life of me I truly dont understand why buying memory for Dell products is so difficult.... It should be a no-brainer but because of dell properitary motherboard its almost trial and error  because of dells terrible product support .I originally was going to purchase some enhanced XMP memory verson 1.3 but I couldnt document that this MB supported it   Good luck   Mac

Have you confirmed that it runs at 1600? I tried some Corsair memory, and it runs, but at 1333. I returned it, and ordered  32gb g from Dell, using your Dell part number.

You are right it runs at 1333, may I asked how much it cost? the dell memory module?

July 10th, 2012 14:00

I has 4 module so it should be 890 divided by 4 means $225 per dimm.

Is that correct?
