XPS 8500 unexpected switch-on

Hello everyone. Being initially unplugged the power cable, every first time in a day when I connect the CPU power cable to wall jack I hear a fan spinning noise and see the power button light first orange, then white, then the PC turns off after a very short time (less than 1 sec). All of this without even touching the power button for turning on.

Other than that, until now my PC is working fine.

I've read all related posts in Dell forums but I have not found a satisfactory explanation about this behavior.

Is this normal with XPS 8500? Why is this happening?

That is normal activity.

The PC is 'examining' itself when power is restored after you connect the power cord.  BIOS has settings for what to do when recovering from a power failure, eg restart or do nothing. So the system is checking to see what it's supposed to do when it gets power.

In your case, BIOS is likely set to do nothing so it shuts off again as soon as it sees that setting.

Hi ds13,

I would suggest you to drain the residual power from the system:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
  • Unplug the power cord from the system
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds
  • Plug the power cord back

You may update the system BIOS. Please refer to the link below:

Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved

Hope this helps. Please reply for any further questions.

I already did power draining, and BIOS is up to date (A10).

Once again:

Is this normal with XPS 8500? Why is this happening?

Hi ds13,

It may be due to the power settings. Please share the ‘Power’ setting in BIOS. You may follow the steps below:

  • Restart or turn on your computer
  • As soon as the Dell™ logo appears, tap until the message Entering Setup appears
  • Go to ‘Power’ and share the options you are getting.

Keep me posted with the findings. I will be glad to assist further.

Hi ds13,

@RoHe – Thanks for the input; appreciate it.

The BIOS settings look normal. As suggested by RoHe, it seems to be a normal activity.
