XPS 8700 suddenly reboots: Nvidia driver or new monitor causing crash?

My system (XPS 8700 tower) has been freezing and then rebooting. About once a day, but not every day. Checked history and all crashes look related to NVidia card driver. Card Driver seems to be up to date. It is a NVidia GeForce GTX 645. I recently connected a Dell Ultrasharp U2415 as my only monitor on the system. Had no issues when adding the monitor and the system ran fine for a few days after adding the new monitor. Now crashing almost daily. This is what the System Events log says in the Dell Support Assistant:

Blue Screen

Detailed information

Cause    The "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 645" driver (C:\WINDOWS\System32\ driverstore\filerepository \nv_desktop_ref4wu.inf_amd64_6e17fae58779a6b0\nviddnkm.sys) appears to have caused a system crash.

Bug Check Code     0x0000001E

Bug Check Parameters   0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF80AE6F015B0, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Device             NVIDIA GeForce GTX 645

This "System Events"  data has been the same (except for the Date and Report ID) 8 times over the last 15 days. Any idea what is going on causing my system to crash?

BTW: If you disconnect this monitor and connect the old one, does it crash?

Version of Windows?

Did you install the driver for the U2415 monitor?

Even if the driver is "up to date", it's possible it got corrupted and needs to be reinstalled. You might look on the NVidia site for a newer driver for your specific card and version of Windows...

More than likely it's the video card driver which is why I suggested you look on NVidia's site for a newer one.

Even if the new video card driver fixes this problem, you should still install the monitor driver, if you haven't already installed it.

Running Windows 10, 64 bit. Haven't tried switching monitors. Just read this post: en.community.dell.com/.../20975074 and tried what he said. Windows found an updated driver for the GT645 card. Will see what happens.

Also, I never installed the software disk that came with the monitor. Just looked at the contents. Just looked at the contents. Seems like it just explained the Menu on the monitor and how to connect/set it up. Maybe I should install it?

The link you sent for the U2415 monitor 'driver' page says the driver is from August 2015. I didn't install any driver when I connected the U2415. I thought the monitor itself automatically did that?? Where do I look to find what driver is now installed for the monitor on my computer?

In Device Manager/Monitors the only thing listed is Generic PnP Monitor.

I would update the NVidia driver AND install the monitor driver.

Use the monitor driver at the link I posted because It might be more recent than what's on your disk. And the online driver supports everything from Win 7 to Win 10.

Just read this about monitor drivers:  'Unlike the graphics card driver, which normally requires a specific driver for full functionality, in most cases a dedicated Display Driver is not required'. (with Windows 10) in this article:

www.dell.com/.../SLN298567

Since I've updated the video card driver I've had no issues. At this point I'm just going to wait and see before I make any more changes. Really appreciate all the help RoHe and SpeedStep!

Except Windows is only seeing a "generic PnP monitor", so you might not be using all the monitor's capabilities...

You could manually set a System Restore point and then install the monitor driver. If the driver causes problems you could revert to that last restore point.

Up to you what/anything to do...
