XPS 8700 with AMD Radeon™ HD R9 270 2GB GDDR5 HDMI to TV HDMI

My TV can't pick up a signal from my new desktop via the HDMI cable upon start-up or restart. My Dell laptop works every time, but my desktop doesn't. Is there a setting or a driver I am missing. The only way my TV will work as my monitor is if I pull out my old tube monitor and power up my desktop with only the VGA connection. Once started I plug my HDMI cable in an my TV becomes a 2nd monitor. I them unplug the VGA cable and my TV works as a monitor (with sound). How do I get my TV to work as my monitor and sound every time upon startup without using my heavy monitor to make it work? When using my TV only I receive an "invalid format" message. Is there a way to make the format valid from the start every time?
