GTX 960 is a great upgrade, and since the 1060 has yet to land, you might get a great deal on a 960.

What resolution monitor? What software? are you gaming? the 960 is a good card for 1080p, but not the best for gaming at 1080p resolution.

GTX 1060 pricing was announced yesterday, starting at $249 USD for the reference card. Release date is said to be July 19th.

I would expect the aftermarket brands like MSI, EVGA, Asus, etc will have a solid lineup of cards.

GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 have been hard to find in stock.  I would expect  GTX 1060 will be also difficult for a while until inventories catch up with demand.

you did not indicate screen resolution (eg 1920x1080) but I'll guess that is what you have.

I'd hit the gaming forums for reviews of the 960 with fallout. fallout is more demanding of system load over civ V or WOW.

I think if it were me I'd wait out the GTX 1060 or even consider a GTX 1070.

I've never met anyone that was unhappy with buying *more* graphics card than they need, and while it might not be needed today, it will delay the next upgrade a while. [edit] but this is making a lot of assumptions around your budget etc. If you are on a tight budget, I'd weigh the cost of the GTX 960 on sale vs a GTX 1060.

good luck and report back in the XPS 8700 graphics card upgrade thread.

thought about the 1070 but felt it was more than I wanted to spend...it costs more than the 8700 did new

Prices should come down a little once the inventory catches up with demand. I am guessing the price will settle in around $399 in a few months.

Using MSI brand graphics cards as comparison:

GTX 960 gaming 2GB is $184, and the price will fall a little bit as it is phased out, but not likely a lot.

GTX 1060 gaming will likely be released just above the reference card pricing, Guessing it will be $279 at release and settle to $229 to $249 depending on the market.

GTX 1070 gaming is available at new egg for $479, and is out of stock everywhere else. I expect the prices to settle in around $420 to $440, maybe even as low as $399 by late fall.

The killer part of the 1070 is it uses less power, so it seems like it will get by with the stock xps 8700 460W  power supply so where most of us who upgraded PSUs get get GTX 770s or 970s, that cost may not be necessary.

So it all comes down to budget, and what gaming performance one needs.

Personally I found the GTX 970 is a great setup for 1080p gaming in 8700s so a 1070 will be even better.

Once the 1060 benchmarks start coming out, the 1060 might outperform a 970 so at the $250 USD price point it will be hard to beat.

Good luck, there is no one "right" answer.

from what I read, which may or may not be correct the 1060 is supposed to perform somewhere  inbettween the 970 and 980  which is good enough for me :)

you might want to look into an AMD RX 480.  Its supposed to be in between a GTX 960 and 970 with up to 8GB of HPM Vram.  The 1060 looks to be better then the 980 as what was said above, so it really depends on if your team green or red.

my understanding is the 1060 costs the same but out performs the 480....also the machine came with a NVidia and my monitor expressly asked for NVidia...so I guess I'm team green, although historicly I always liked team red
