XPS410/9200 Upgradable to 8Gb's RAM?

Can I or can't i upgrade my 410 to 8Gb's of RAM?  I want to upgrade my system from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit and was going to install 8Gb's of RAM...but can't seem to get a straight answer weather my system can support 8Gb's or not.

My manual says 4Gb's is the limit.  1 Dell TEch I talked to said that was true, but then another Dell Tech said it wasn't and i could go to 8Gb's.  Reading through he forums, people are split on it as well, and even Corsair Memory and Crucial Memory info splits on it.

So...anyone care to help me out with this question?

thanks

I installed the following

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3089474&CatId=2264

I bought two of them equal to 8GB of installed 800MHZ DDR2-6400

THIS DIDNT WORK. DELL XPS 410 GAVE ME NUMBERS 3 AND 4 LIT UP ON FRONT OF PC. THIS CODE = NOT REC. MEMORY.

Can someone LINK what memory they used to equal 8GB for there XPS 410, and why mine didnt work? When I mean didnt work all it did was beep over and over...never even showed the BIOS post screen. One stick of it worked =2GB but nothing more then that.

Thanks,

Xtreme

TO CONFIRM

THE FOLLOWING MEMORY WORKS IN DELL XPS 410, which brings this to a total of 8GB installed even though Dell and other websites say 1GB per slot is max.

I have it installed and running two games at once Cysis and WOW very stable!!

I also wanted to confirm that my new Q6600 Quad works great as well in the Dell XPS 410!

Hope this helps future upgrades for XPS 410 owners.

Similar upgrade with my XPS 410. I already have Vista 64bit installed and don't need more than 4GB of RAM.
Upgraded my 4x1GB 667MHz sticks (mixed Dell and Crucial) with 2x2GB 800MHz sticks (Crucial) only because the 2x2GB sticks were on sale at a local electronics store with an additional $7 rebate.

I have noticed about a 20-25% increase in my overall system performance since going from 4 to 8 gigs. Definatly in the video crunching dept and there is a lot less harddisk activity I noticed when running games as more is loaded into memory.

Thanks Davet50.

After reading your reply and the performance gain you saw with 8GB, I decided to buy another 4GB for my XPS 410. This time, Kingston since the Crucial I bought before was out of stock. So now I have 8GB installed, even if I don't feel I need it, at a very low cost.

Kingston 2x2GB kit  - KVR800D2K2 DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz

xtreme3881,

The reason the Corsair memory didn't work in the XPS 410 is that it is rated at 2.1V instead of the JEDEC standard for DDR2 of 1.8V. The Corsair you linked to above is designed for "overclocking."  All Dell systems like memory that runs at the standard voltage. The Kingston you bought does run at 1.8V. Never assume that "fancy" memory is better, especially when used in OEM systems. It is always better to just get the "value" memory.

I know this is an old topic but I just started thinking about this as I'm about to install Windows 7 64-bit on my Dimension 9200 system.  It seems to have been established that the XPS410 can handle 8GB of RAM - now does this also mean for sure that the Dimension 9200 will too?

curteye,
You'll be fine with a maximum of 8GB in your 9200. Both the XPS 410 and 9200 are the same with the same motherboard. Below are some 800MHz  2x2GB kits I've used in my XPS 410. I'm currently running Windows 7 RC 64bit and Vista Home Premium 64bit with 6GB as I didn't need the full 8GB.

Crucial 2x2GB kit - CT2CP25664AA800 DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz
Kingston 2x2GB kit  - KVR800D2K2 DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz

Hi!

I am a Dell fan, I have Dimension 9200 and multiple c521 and e521 computers.  Is there any reason to have 800 MHZ RAM as opposed to 667MHZ ram?  I thought the front side bus on this DELL xps410/dimension 9200 limits the ram to 667. I have been looking for the answer for some time. It seems that the c521 and e521 will see (AND USE) ram speeds up to 800MHZ according to various sites and posts. Do you have any idea?  Thank you for your time and answer.

The AMD processors in the C521 and E521 models can make use of the extra bandwidth provided by the 800mhz memory, while the Intel processor in the Dim 9200 doesn't need the extra bandwidth at all. However, even with the AMD based models where the extra memory bandwidth could be used, the difference is not very significant, and not worthy of the upgrade cost.

On my XPS-410, I installed 8GB of Corsair RAM (4 cards of 2GB each) from the Dell Website, and when I run Win-7 64-bit, all 8GB are seen: 8125 MB total of Physical Memory out of 8192 MB installed.  When I boot into Win-XP, the usual 3.5 GB are seen, but otherwise works fine.

System Info applet shows 7.93 GB Physical,  15.9 virtual (pagefile.sys = 8.3GB).

Hi Coleygm. sorry to resurrect this zombie thread.  Maybe you have email replies on for this.  Anyway, I was wondering if you were able to upgrade your XPS410 to 8GB of RAM.  I want to install W7x64 and also upgrade to 8GB.   Like you, I get conflicting answers.  Thanks!

Hi Coleygm,  nevermind my previous post (if you got it).  I now see the entire thread.  IE6 only showed me your post and not the follow-ups.  Stupid work laptop!  :emotion-10:
