Apparently the tags made it in, but the actual question did not.
When I attempt to power on the machine it sometimes powers on, sometimes shows an amber light (sleep mode), sometimes shows a white light but never goes into POST, and sometimes turns on normally.
The Dell tech came and replaced the mother board, the power supply and fan. This did not solve the problem. When he called Dell, the next suggestion was to replace the hard drive.
Since the machine is apparently not getting as far as POST, I don't see how the hard drive could be involved, and don't desire to either waste my time or Dell's money (which will translate into higher prices at some point).
I have seen this problem reported before, but have never seen a solution.
