Thanks Speed step - will try this - but would not downloading the latest drivers for the physical TNT Nividia card make the card Media player 9.x compatible?

WIN9X
0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation. You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.
Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000
Install Directx 8.1
If you have installed Directx9 this is the problem because your sound card is not Directx9 compatable.
Then try installing Windows Media Player 7.1

You have Driver problems and a Lack of Directx 9x support.
Windows Media player 9 series and Directx9 are the issues.
Try running DXDIAG and see how many things are broken.
Customers using Microsoft* Windows NT* 4.0 or Windows* 98 may encounter Overwrite Protection error when attempting to install SoundMAX* drivers. During the installation process of the drivers, the routine creates a sub-directory named, "Intel Desktop Board" within your Program Files sub-directory. After the sub-directory is created, the installer will then decompress files and store them in the sub-directory. Several "_Setup.dll" files are decompressed, and are intended for special sub-directories of their own. However, the extraction routine attempts to place them in the "Intel Desktop Board" sub-directory, resulting in a "overwrite protection" error.
This only affects the SoundMAX audio drivers that are intended for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98.
Integrated audio driver for Intel desktop boards using AC '97 processing with the Analog Devices (ADI) AD1885, AD1980, AD1981A or AD1981B codecs

your knowledge is excellent - Thank you for your time.
So do you wish me to download and install the sound max 3 for 1881 driver? I was not sure where you wanted me to go with your response.
I have run dxdiag and again it has problems with the sound "problem getting extra sound info result code 0x8000405 general failure"
Again will winows media player v9.x be able to work? or do I need to stick with older versions.
I have used cd player in windows and it plays the audio cd!
