dell xps 8300 with gtx 580?

Hi,

Recently ordered a dell xps 8300 which has a 460 W PSU and an AMD Radeon HD 6770 graphic card.

I'm thinking about upgrading the graphic card to a GTX 580. I think the length of the GTX 580 is 10.6 inch. Will it fit inside the XPS case.

Also, I would probably have to change the PSU as well, was thinking about the Corsair TX650W. Will this fit too?

The GTX580 was never tested/validated on this PC so I cannot know if it will "fit". The 3rd party power supply would be fine. But, before you spend any money, why not test the PC as is and see if it meets your needs?

Thanks Chris...But do you have any idea about the HD 6970 or HD 6950? Will they go with the XPS 8300?

I have the dell xps 8300 now also, and finding it doesn't cope ideally with battlefield 3 at 1900x1080. I need to upgrade to the hd 6950 I believe. Has anyone tried this and able to verify that it works well, ie fits ok, power supply copes etc

Appreciate any responses on this

ps, it looks like this pc has been sold by dell with this gpu, although this one has an issue, but I assume they are generally ok.with size and powersupply, must have been tested by dell..?

Dell sells models with the same model number and different power supplies.

HD6950 would REQUIRE a New Power Supply.  And seeing that its 10 inches long it may not fit into the case.

Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedPSU for a list of Certified products

Corsair TX850 V2 for example.

If you got a low end model you also got the low end power supply.

My XPS 8300 came from Dell with a oem 560 ti and worked fine with the standard 460 watt PSU.

I have just tried to fit a GTX580 which there is plenty of room for, but I just get a black screen so I wonder if the bios issue that prevents the use of the 600 and 700 series is at fault here? Or maybe I was just sold a duff card?

Regarding the PSU, I also fitted a Corsair CX 750 M

Apart from being a bit longer so that the stops no longer operate, it bolts in just the same as the Dell and is working fine, the only thing I had to so was the CPU lead P2 has an 8 pin block whereas the Dell Motherboard uses a 4 pin, the 8 pin block though snaps easily into two parts so you are then left with 2 4 pin connectors and you just use one of them.

Does anybody now if the high end AMD cards work ok in the Dell XPS?
