I just learned this--You don't get recovery disk if you ordered Windows 7. Dell no longer supplies the OS disk with windows 7 computers. You make your own recovery disks. Directions HERE.
Here's the notice: Dell no longer provides the operating system or resource disks in the box for Windows 7 Systems. It is important for you to create recovery disks in case of a hard drive failure. If you do not create the recovery disks, there may be a charge from Dell for the operating system recovery media.

WOW, good find Mary. There must be an different recovery partition on the HD to allow the user to create their own recovery disc's.

Mary.
Thank's for the useful info, seems to be a repeat of Dell infamous 'Media Reduction Initiative' of several years ago. :emotion-4:

That's what I thought. We know how that turned out. I guess pricing pressures forced them into this. I'm bummed because I ordered a new laptop on the 8th--the day after this was announced. I didn't see the posting until today. The "may be a charge" phrase gives them some wiggle room. I'll see if the disks are included in my package.
Edit: I checked my order details and it does list Dell Resource and Backup DVD. Maybe the new policy is not in effect yet.

Hi Mary.
Please let us know if you receive a set of Dell reinstallation discs with the laptop.
I'm a little upset about this also, as I recently ordered a Vostro desktop, with W7, guess I'll have to contact the people in Houston, the Vostro was shipped to and find out if they have the discs. :emotion-43:

I'll let you know. I think you're OK since this notice was just posted a few days ago and my order details has the dvd listed. I was thinking that this policy might not apply for all models, just the budget models that sell for $299 or thereabouts. That makes sense considering the cost of Win 7.

I ordered on April 7th and it only lists the resource DVD with applications and also lists DataSafe Local Backup 2.0 which is what they are going to for you to create your own OS DVD from. Doesn't look too promising that I will actually get an OS disc with my system.

I just purchased an Inspiron 560 and it did NOT come with Windows 7 media. Instructions state that user must create recovery media using the Dell Datasafe software. I purchased the premium upgrade to the Datasafe software, then, following the instructions, I have created both DVD recovery media and 8-GB USB flashdrive recovery image. The system is unable to boot from either o these recovery media, so I'll need to talk to Dell support to see if they can help me resolve the issue. FYI, I'm a seasoned computer/network engineer, so I'm pretty sure the issue is not that I am doing this incorrectly (though of course, I won't know until Dellsupport and I finish troubleshooting -- you always have to allow for "end-user misunderstood the instructions" :-). Just putting this out here for two reasons: In case anyone else is having the same problem I am, perhaps they'll offer advice; and perhaps a note of warning to those of you who have alredy posted -- you may want to pay careful attention to getting or creating recovery media starting the instant you get your 560 home, in case you end up with the same problem I'm having. I'm very nervous that I can't fix this computer if a serious problem occurs, so I'm left vulnerable right now. Not very pleased about it -- I think the manufacturer of a system ought to either include OS media or make darned sure that the end user can create his/her own with little trouble or expense.

Thanks for the heads up. :emotion-21:
That's the same issue, that killed Dell's previous 'Media Reduction Initiative'.

You're quite welcome! I just submitted a request for Dell to provide me with the media. I'll look forward to receiving it, and I'd like to get it at no charge, considering I've already spent $80 for the upgrade to Datasafe and an 8-GB flash drive, with no working boot image still. (Admittedly, I still have not yet contacted tech support, either, so I could be working on this the hard way. Just hardheaded I suppose.)

Good luck and I hope it works out for you.
When I had the same issue several years ago, Dell shipped me a free complete set of reinstallation discs, but unfortunately Dell often change their policies.

I contacted Dell and ordered the disks. They sent an email to me asking for information to allow them to transfer ownership from the retailer (curious, since I registerd the system the moment I got it). In any case, responding to that email is no big issue, so I did (just today), and I'm awaiting the disks. No mention of Dell charging me for them, and sice they didn't ask for a credit card number, it seems I'll be geting them at no charge. So, all in all, a hassle, but a minor one.
