hissing sound from center speaker sb audigy2 and 7.1 creative inspire t7900 system

At first my original 5.1 sound system altec lansing ada 995 was replaced by dell because my speakers were crackling and popping like crazy. however, the new system 7.1 creative inspire t7900 was also crackling and popping so dell replaced the sound card: sb audigy2. the new card eliminated the crackling and popping but the center speaker started to hiss so yesterday dell sent me a new sound system but the horrible hissing noise hasn't stopped. Why the hiss? What can I suggest to dell? can the audigy2 card handle 7.1?

The Audigy 2ZS does support 7.1, at least the Retail version does, not sure about the Dell OEM Model but I suspect it does too.

Check the Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and make sure the speaker option is set up for 7.1.

I don't really have any suggestions other than the speaker system may have a problem and that's causing the center speaker hiss problem.  I know that's probably not what you want to hear but that would be my best "educated" guess.  All the speakers in the system are fed from the power amplifier in the bass speaker.  Hiss or "white noise" (the proper technical name) is probably a function of the power amplifier in the speaker system.

You can do one test.  Disconnect the three audio cable connections to the PC and then turn on the speakers.  If you still hear the hiss then the problem IS in the speakers.

I disconnected the 3 connections and no white noise. botz

Hmm, that sort of points it back to the PC.  I assume you have the volume control on the speakers turned up to the "normal" level.  But, contact Dell and go from there since you still have a warranty contract.

If the headphones work OK (which is 2 channel stereo) it can be either a configuration issue in the sound card, or a configuration issue with the speaker system or something internal in the speaker system.

I would think "direct" would be the proper selection since the sound card is 7.1 capable, but try the others and see what happens.

Volume is set to "normal" on my PC's Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices, and the external Volume Control Unit of my Creative Inspire T7900 7.1 sound system is also setat "normal". Is there perhaps another volume control that I missed?

I tested again the new sound card. I get perfect reception with both my normal headphones and my  USB headphones. Can I conclude that the problem does not come from the sound card?

Also, in the back of the subwoofer there is a switch with 3 settings:1) 5.1 to 7.1 upmix; 2) direct; and 3) 6.1 to 7.1 upmix. Which one applies to me?

fireberd: Let's say I want to start with the possible configuration issue in the sound card. Where do I begin?

I also ran a Creative on-line autoupdate which identified my audio card to be SB Audigy 2, DR release 2.18.1.

In addition I went to Start/All Programs/Creative/Creative Audio Console to check out if if there is any reference to 7.1. There isn't any. Under the entry speakers the highest number is 6.1.
