how to make a connect a laptop and mini-tower so you can share files?

the Mini-Tower[Optiplex GX240] is XP Pro sp3

The Laptop[Latitude D510] is 7 Home Premium sp1

If it can be done wirelessly, that would be nice, but any way to connect the two so i can move files

between the two would be much appreciated, thank you for your help.

Bridged USB cable.

If they're on the same (WiFi) network you should be able set up file sharing.

The tower is connected through the modem, and the laptop is using the wi-fi which is Connected to the modem. does that count?

I presume you mean connected through the router. The router should be what's connected to the modem...

Yes, if they're on your local network, you should be able to set up file sharing in Windows so that files can be moved between both PCs.

the laptop is connected to the router with the wi-fi

the desktop is connected to the modem that's wired

If they're not both connected to the router, they're not on a network...

Use a tornado cable.

No this is not available.

Cross over is not available and its not that simple.

There is no such thing as peer DHCP so IP Addressing must be manual and the DOMAIN or WORKGROUP must match on both machines as must the subnet and default gateway and dns.

Either use a Tornado cable or Peer to Peer Networking with a Router.

The tornado is better because setup is easier.
