Hi hms1047,

Welcome to the community.

Dell Dimension 4550 memory can have maximum of 512 upto 1GB.

Below is the specification of memory--

Architecture --DDR SDRAM

Memory connectors --two

Memory capacities-- 128-, 256-, and 512-MB non-ECC DDR SDRAM

Minimum memory--128 MB

Maximum memory --1 GB

Maximum type ---DDR 333 (non-ECC) only on computers with 533-MHz system clock speed

DDR 266 (non-ECC) on computers with either 400- or 533-MHz system clock speed

And here is the link for the Dimension 4550 (533MHz Front Side Bus) memory--

Please check and let me know.

Thank you.

Dell's Dimension 4550 memory documentation is wrong.

It is well documented that either the 400MHz, or the 533MHz versions of the Dimension 4550 support 2gb [2 x 1gb modules] of DDR memory.

I purchased a Dimension 4550 many years ago, with a 533MHz FSB when Dell first sold it and upgrade the memory to 2gb, when the 1GB modules were available.

If you have either a 1.80, 1.90, 2.0, or 2.20 GHz processor, then it should be a 400MHz FSB and if it's either a 2.26, 2.4, 2.53, 2.66, 2.8, or 3.06 GHz processor, it's a 533MHz FSB.

See HERE.

You could also, download THIS, small free utility, that will give you the information, or go to www.crucial.com and use their memory advisor tool.
