Hello Chrisval,

The OptiPlex 745 supports Intel Pentium 4 HT, Pentium D, Celeron D and Intel Core 2 Duo processors. The system was never tested with the Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6700. The OptiPlex 745 has Intel Q965 Express Chipset. Please check out the list of compatible processors under Compatible Products

**Note: Upgrading this part is purely based on user's discretion. Warranty as per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered. However we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.

Hope this helps!

Core 2 Quad processors are not supported by the OptiPlex 745.

OptiPlex 745 processor upgrade info, can be found here:

Prior to installing the processor, remember to update the BIOS to the latest version.

My Dell OptiPlex 745 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, runs happily with Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600. Memory is 4 Gb which I will update. The computer seems to run cool enough. Bios has been updated. I have not changed power supply or fans. I may try the quad Q6700. Not bad for a $10 computer I picked up at a yard sale. I did have to buy hard drive, CPU, and Windows OS.

Never too late to comment.

The first two replies are the party line answers - not supported or tested (old info).

Dell is a hardware company and they will limit upgrading per spec and BIOS updates.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Q6700 processors have been upgraded on the OptiPlex 745 for several years.

To keep it simple - verify the following for CPU upgrades based on computer model/motherboard:

  1. Does the BIOS support it?
  2. Check the FSB Speed Maxmium (1066 MHz, 1333 MHz, etc)
  3. Check the Lithography (65nm, 45nm, etc)
  4. Check the Max TDP (65w, 90w, 130w, etc)
  5. Check the Heatsink and fan assy.

Also, people will link you to Intel's chipset spec, but PC manufacturers will limit upgrades. For instance, Dell OptiPlex 745 has a Intel Q945 (ICH8) Express Chipset and limits the FSB speed to 1066 MHz, while a motherboard company uses the same Intel Q945 will allow CPUs with FSB 1333 MHz.
