1280 x 960 screen resolution not avaliable on Dimension 2400 (Intel 82845G graphics)

I can't set my desired screen resolution, 1280 x 960 pixels, it's not among the resolution options, the closest 4:3 resolution ratios are 1154 x 864 and 1600 x 1200 (the first is to small and the second to large in my taste).

The computer is a Dell Dimension 2400, the chipset seems to be an Intel i845G with the 845G built in graphics chip. I have tried the latest drivers from intel.com (6.14.10.4020 or simply "14.10").

I can choose the adjoining graphic modes 1280 x 768 and 1280 x 1024, but not the 4/3 version of 1280 (1280 x 960, 1280*3/4 is 960, 960*4/3 is 1280). Is this a hardware limitation? A software limitation?

About monitor compatibility (Sony G420 monitor): When i choose "Graphic Properties" from the "Intel(R) Extreme Graphics" tab, and choose the Information tab, and the Monitor button, it lists the 1280 x 960 screen resolution under "Supported Modes", so it recognize the resolution as a monitor supported mode.

Thanks

Johan Ring,

Try the Intel driver.
Dimension 2300, 2300C, 2350, 2400, 4500C, 4500S and Optiplex SX/GX260, GX60 use the Intel 845 video driver -
* Click Intel 82845G Graphics Controller

* Click your operating system
* Click Go!
* Click the latest Graphics Driver
* Next to English, click the file
* Click Download (recommended site)
* Click Save
* Click the Desktop icon
* Click Save
* Double click the downloaded file from your desktop. Follow any prompts to install the driver

Thank you for your reply.

I did try that driver (version "14.10", from 1/25/2005), as well as two older drivers, and the Dell driver (which seems to be the 14.7.0.3889 Intel 845G driver). None of those drivers however, enable that screen resolution.

If you have more suggestions, please don't hesitate to express them here.

Thanks

Any updated on this? Does anybody else with a Dimension 2400 (and Intel 82845G graphics) have the 1280 x 960 resolution?

Kind regards

Johan

Wide XGA (WXGA) is a display standard that supports a resolution of 1280 to 1366 horizontal pixels by 720 to 800 vertical pixels. These are the most common resolutions (not in any particular order): 1366x768, 1280x800, 1280x768, 1280x720 and 1360x768. Usually used in LCD TV sets and computer monitors for widescreen presentation. The 136x by nnn resolutions commonly apply to LCD TVs while the 1280 by nnn resolutions are found mostly in notebooks/laptops.

Basically, WXGA means low resolution (by modern standards), wide screen (16:9), display. 1366x768, and 1280x720 provide perfectly square pixels at an aspect ratio of 16:9, 1360x768 also comes very close. The other possible WXGA resolutions do not provide perfectly square pixels.

Thanks for the info.

There seems to be two older posts about this particular screen resolution here:

Why not 1280 x 960? http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_video&message.id=2594&query.id=177233

1280 x 960 on a 9700 TX http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_video&message.id=50760&query.id=177233

I understand very well that it's the cheap on-board graphics card that simply refuse to display this resolution, I just want an explanation from Dell or Intel. Michael, it's been 6 months already, cough up an explanation already, or at least find a forum supporter that know about this device.

Best regards
