64-Bit Vista

I just ordered an XPS 420, with Vista Home Premium. Can I count on it having the 64-Bit edition when it gets to me or will I have to reinstall?

Your Xp 420 will come with 32-bit Vista, and only 32-bit. It does NOT include the disks for the 64-bit version.

It allows your machine to recognize more than 3GB of memory.

Whats so great about 64bit anyway?

So basically that 4GB of RAM I ordered isn't going to be fully functional?

You will not be able to use ALL the 4gig of ram with Vista 32-bit.

Depending on the address space that will get used by components in your system, you will probably end up being able to use from 3.25 to maybe 3.5gig of your ram.

This limitation is the (I believe) primary reason Dell has configurations for 3gig of ram from the factory.

No, I ordered my machine with 4GB of RAM. Straight from the factory.

you are correct the system will "See" all four gigs of ram but it will only be able to address 3 gig due to limitations of the OS.

Another use pointed out that runing a 64 bit vs a 32 bit system is like running windows 98 vs windows NT...

Hey Guys,

So my 420 will run the 64 bit version. Is the 64 bit version stable? Is there a huge difference? If so this would in and of itself make one want to purchase the 64 bit version of the OS.

Also, yes your 4 gigs of ram is virtually useless as it will probably show, if I understand Dells addressing as posted in the xps faq, you'll probably see something like 3.25 gigs of ram.

I do believe Dell should offer the 64 bit version as an option, atleast?

What we'll have to do is go through Microsoft's website and order the 64-Bit Disk. You have to fill out these forms and pay another $10 but they'll send you a new DVD with the 64-Bit edition on it. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx

Thanks for the link to the Microsoft site, but it eems that the offer is only good for retail versions of Vista.

I entered the information requested to get a 64-bit DVD for my XPS420 that came with Vista Home Premium, and I recieved an error message stating..

We're sorry, the following error(s) have occurred:

There is another thread in the vista forum, under software, and it does seem to be a fact that the oem version of vista does not qualify for the $10 dvd 64bit version.

One will have to buy a new oem 64bit version from say newegg.com to get atleast some savings in the cost.

I'll have to wait until my system arrives and figure out if I'm going to have the same issues first, but I'll keep you updated.

Let us know what they say?

It seems odd to sell a 64 bit system with a 32 bit OS, but then again, who knows which applications I have that will even work on 64 bits?
