DELL Screen Frozen F2 F12 does not work after reboot HELP?
My son was on his computer and it froze. He rebooted it and now there is a dell screen it has F2=Setup and F12= start menu . I click on either one and it doesn't do anything. How do I get out of this screen? Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop

Do you mean you're clicking with the mouse, or pressing the F2 or F12 key on the keyboard? The mouse won't work on that screen.

Is this a USB keyboard (flat connector) or PS/2 keyboard (round connector)? If USB, try plugging it into a different USB port. Not all USB ports are active during boot. If no USB port is active, try borrowing a PS/2 keyboard from another system. If it's a wireless keyboard, make sure the batteries are ok, too.
Does it get anywhere beyond that Dell screen with F2 and F12? Any error messages?

Don't hold the Function key down. Just start tapping the key as soon as you turn the power on. If you hold key down, it may cause 'keyboard error' and fail.
If that doesn't help, you should contact Dell for assistance. I hope it's still under warranty.

I had my PC frozen on the Dell start screen - turned pc on and off several time, then decided to unplug and replug it before I opened it to try the previous fix, it started right up and finished the install of windows 7 replacing win xp. No idea why this got it going but it sure made me happy.

Glad it worked for you too! Now, I just wish I had stayed win Win 7, I'm not a happy camper with Win 8 or 8.

Install the free Classic Shell and it will make Win 8/8.1 look/feel like Win 7.

Thank you so much, this really helped me, so glad I found this! Same thing, Dell screen locked, F2, F5 didn't work, unplug replug solved the problem.
