Dell Dimension 4600 Memory Upgrade

I have just installed two Dell 1GB Memory Modules, in my Dimension 4600 Computer, in DIMM1&2 ( in place of the original 256MB modules). Can I install the original two 256MB modules in DIMM2&3 to gain extra memory ?

Yes.

Supports 4 Gig Max but 3 gig with 32 bit OS.

Memory Type: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4
Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules. If your model uses the Pentium 4 with a 800MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) you must use the PC3200 parts. If your system has the Pentium 4 with the 533MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) you can use either the PC2700 or PC3200 parts.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

I think the chipset supports a maximum of 2gb of memory, and thus the extra memory won't be recognized.

I too wanted to upgrade my memory. I installed 2x1Gb and re-installed the 2x512Mb that were originally installed. Computer only sees 2GB. rechecked seating but can't seem to find the other 1Gb. Using Linux when I list hardware each slot shows only 512 Mb. Any ideas?

Some mainboards have trouble recognizing some types of memory. Or, it may want two matched 2 x 1gb pairs. All speculation, mind you.

I am attempting to install 4x1g sticks in my Dell Dimension 4600, and even though setup sees 4g, the system boots up so far and gives me an error. I have put all 4 sticks in, 2 at a time and it works with all 4. But if I put all 4 in it does not. I currently have the original 2x256m and 2x1g and the system works. I am aware of matching the slots. Any help would be appreciated.
