Dell Dimension 8400 upgrading motherboard/CPU question

hello,

i am currently using a Dimension 8400 with a OU7077 dell motherboard 800mhz bus with a socket LGA775. since this motherboard uses a i925x chipset it cannot support a dual core processor (i am currently using a intel pentium 4 630, 2mb L2 cache, hyper-threaded) my question is could i upgrade my motherboard so that i could then upgrade to a duel core processor, and if so how would this effect my chipset and BIOS (Ao9). also any possible suggestion for mobo and proccessor upgrade combonations would be nice   :)

Dell systems use proprietary motherboards and as such are not upgradeable. The main issues are the layouts are not standard so any board but another 8400 board will require hackup the back end of the case. Then there would be no way to interface the front I/O to the board as Dell cables are again proprietary and pin outs are not available .

There is no current Dell motherboard supporting a dual core processor that will fit into the 8400 clam shell case, the 8400 is the final model in this ATX series.

Even if you find a third party motherboard that would fit the case, then a new retail copy of windows would be needed, Dell's OEM copies are tied to their BIOS.

Maybe it's time to buy a new system.

I look forward to shedding Dell's handcuffs that they built into this system.

Trying to do anything to this system has been jsut ridiculously difficult.

The 64 meg boot sector makes it annoying to build the system with linux or anything else.

Yep, the best system to upgrade is the computer you build yourself, from standard components.

i currently have a dell dimension 8400 with the OU7077 motherboard and it runs a pentium 4 660 3.6gHz Prescott cpu quite well, very fast, with 32-bit windows XP PRO.  It is a 64 bit cpu, and is capable of running a 64 bit windows 7 custom installation. 

I have also used the P4 630 3.0gHz cpu on an intel motherboard.  I upgraded it to a P4 670 3.8gHz cpu and it is also quite fast.   No complaints on either the dell or the intel machines.  These P4 processors can be had on ebay for around 5, but you will need to ensure that your fan and heatsink will cool a faster running cpu.  On my intel 3.8gHz cpu upgrade I had to also upgrade the heatsink and fan becuase of overheating.  all is good now.
