Dell Inspiron 530 processor socket type?

Apparently this computer hasn't got a dual core processor so I was thinking about upgrading it to dual core but I don't know the socket type of the motherboard nor do I know if the motherboard will support dual core. Anyone know?

 DS530

Both the Inspiron 530 Mini tower and the Slimline version have a Socket LGA 775.

Inspiron 530 systems support both Pentium Dual-Core or Core 2 Duo processors.

Assuming that you have the Mini Tower version.

There are two versions of the 530 mini Tower, one version has a 300w power supply and a FoxConn G33m02 [Dell P/N ORY007] motherboard, this version does not support Core 2 Quad processors, only Core 2 Duo, Pentium Dual-Core and Celeron processors.

The second version has 350w power supply and a FoxConn G33m03 [Dell P/N OFM586] motherboard, this supports both, Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo processors, etc.

The Inspiron 530 specifications are HERE

I just want to upgrade it to dual, not quad, so basically: Intel Celeron E3400 Wolfdale would work on either wouldn't it?

My tower itself is a full tower, not a mini so I'm a bit confused on that part :S

No, the Celerons approved by Dell for the Inspiron 530 are the following:

Intel Celeron processor 430
Intel Celeron Processor 420 (1.6 GHz, 800 FSB)

If you want a Dual Core, look for the following:

Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2140 (1.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2160 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200(2.5 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)

Prior to installing the processor you need to check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

Personally, I upgrade the 530 with a Socket 775 Core 2 Duo.

The Inspiron 530 is not manufactured in a full tower version, only the Mini Tower, or a Slimline Tower.

The 530 Mini Tower version is shown HERE and the Slimline HERE

This here would work as well wouldn't it? & the fastest one I've seen for a 775 socket.

Intel Pentium D 945 3.4Ghz 800Mhz 2x2Mb socket 775 Dual-core Cpu

The Intel Pentium D 945 is not compatible with the Inspiron 530.

These are the CPU's supported by the Inspiron 530 with a G33M02 board:

Intel Celeron processor 430
Intel Celeron Processor 420 (1.6 GHz, 800 FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2140 (1.6 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 2160 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200(2.5 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 (1.8 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 (2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 (1.86 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 (2.13 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 (2.33 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 (2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8400, 3.0GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0  45nm
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8500, 3.16GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, C0
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, E8600, 3.33GHz, 6MB, 1333FSB, 65W, E0
MP628 Conroe Kit, E6850, 3.0G, 4MB, 1333FSB, G0
PN416 Conroe Kit, E6700, 2.66G, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2
KU345 Conroe Kit, E6600, 2.4G, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2

Prior to installing the processor you need to check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

What CPU do you have now?  I think you might be confused as to what you should upgrade to.  The Pentium D 945 3.4 GHZ is not the fastest.  Based on the list that Bev provided, all of these are faster than the PD 945 except for the first three.

The Q9650 is probably the fastest 775 socket CPU, but that's a quad.  For your system, the E8500 & E8600 would be the fastest.  If you are going to upgrade, you should be going with a C2D depending on what you have now.   You have to compare costs to.  For example; you would notice no difference between the E8400, E8500 & E8600 and the same could apply to others as well.

I have this same tower I would suggest the e8600. I can't really say how it performs because my psu is fried as of now
