Hi FuzzyTrex,

Dell has tested following Graphics Cards with Dell XPS 8300 system:

  • ATI Radeon HD 5450
  • ATI Radeon HD 5670
  • ATI Radeon HD 5770
  • ATI Radeon HD 5870
  • AMD Radeon HD 6770
  • AMD Radeon 6950
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT420
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460

Theoretically speaking you should be able to install the AMD Radeon 7870 card on the system, but you might need to upgrade the power supply to 500W or more to support it. However, Dell has not tested this card on this system. Hope this helps.

You may refer to the Service Manual of this system for instructions for replacing the components. Please follow the safety instructions.

Please reply if you have any questions.

So chances are it would work? Would any power supply work too?

Hi  FuzzyTrex,

The card should work with this system. I did some research online and found this link where few users have successfully installed the card and it is working fine.

I swapped out the original video card for the Radeon HD 5450 and it didn't work.  Its listed above as being tested by Dell.

Is there some trick to upgrading XPS 8300 video?  After putting in the new card the system won't even boot.  The power light comes on when I press it, but that's it.  The HD doesn't spin, no normal boot noises and beeps.  Do I have to fiddle with the BIOS?

I bought two 5450s and neither work.  They do work fine in a different system.

I would also like to know if the 5450 card works.  I am thinking about upgrading as well, since I have been recieving blue screens of death when i launch a number of Chrome windows/tabs.

Actually the 5450 didn't ever work, but I did get another Radeon model to work.  BSOD continued however.

the 5450 works fine.  Unfortunately it didn't solve the BSOD issue.  I've now tried swapping out every component except the MoBo and processors.  I've read elsewhere this is a common issue with XPS 8300.  Piece of junk.

Thank you for confirming the 8300 issues.  Saves me from rushing out to get some RAM and/or Video card.  Currently I have 6GB of memory and the integrated graphics.

However, which Radeon model did you get to work, in case I decide to upgrade someday???
