Dimension 8400 BIOS "Update Failed!" "Could not find the flash image in memory"

I receive the following message when performing a BIOS update on a Dimension 8400 from version A03 to A09:

"Update Failed!" "Could not find the flash image in memory"

I get the same message when running the BIOS update exe file D8400A09.EXE within Windows XP or via a bootable floppy disk.

Any suggestions

Does it boot up normally?

Power off and disconnect PC from the wall. Press/hold power button on
the tower for ~15 sec. Open the case and remove the battery from the
motherboard. Press/hold the power button again for ~30 sec. Replace the
battery (right side up!), close the case and see if it boots.

This worked for me on my OptiPlex 980 that was having the same problem updating the BIOS. I also replaced the CMOS battery. Was able to update the BIOS without the missing image message appearing.

Newer systems like the 980 may require INTEL Management Engine so DOS cannot be used.
