Fan cycling
My 8100 does it every 10 seconds. Dell tech support said it was a software issue and would not cover it under hardware extended warranty. Any solutions out there?

The link seems to have been removed. I've asked for clarification of why it's no longer available.
You can try this until we get a response and a full fix from Dell:

Hi Swklint,
The 8100 is what? Dimension? Studio XPS?

It's a Studio.

You're not alone, here, here...
Starting to wonder if one of last week's MS updates has something to do with this..??

They would not specify what the software issue was, only that my extended warranty covered hardware only and it would cost $129.00 for them to assist.

Bummer, cwklint, but thanks.
For you, RoHe, others,... anybody try MS or other update rollbacks? The way the problem has started around the same time for multiple users, in the absence of other system problems, certainly seems consistent with some software issue. I'm tempted to go back to a restore point a couple weeks back, before this all started happening, to see whether the problem disappears.

Having the same problem, over the last few days, with my Studio XPS 8100 as described by cwklint, as well as peteyork in another thread. Fan cycles every 8 or 9 seconds, but only when I'm logged into Windows. Not happening when I was running extended boot diagnostics. I have two questions...
1) for cwklint, did Dell provide any further info related to your comment "Dell tech support said it was a software issue"? What software, I wonder? Theirs? MS's?
2) for RoHe, any further info on your comment suspecting an MS update? Have you or anyone you're aware of tried rolling back updates?
Thanks.

Read this. It's a Dell SupportAssist issue, not MS update issue.

Thanks much. Looks like the posted hotfix did the trick! I'll monitor and post if the problem returns.

ROHE,
Could you post the entire fix, I'm not able to follow the link. I have the exact same issue.
Regards.

I went to add remove programs and deleted everything associated with Dell data vault, did a restart and fan works correctly now.

Dell's hotfix was removed, so I posted a work-around above...
