Fan replacement

I have an out of warranty Dimension 4600. When booting up, I have been getting a message about a previous fan failure and sometimes my computer shuts down by itself while I am online. Looking at the posts on this site, it appears that I need to replace the fan. Two questions, (1) how do I get a new fan and (2) is it easy for me to replace the fan myself?

You can buy a replaement Dell OEM D-4600 fan/shroud unit from either Dell Spare Parts or from here.

Replacing the fan is a fairly easy project.

How to remove and replace parts in the D-4600 system.

The problem is, you did not install the correct Dell fan, which is a proprietary unit.

Unless the Dell fan is installed, then a 'Alert! Previous Fan Failure. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility' error message, will be given, at every boot up, as you obviously have found out.

I know that. The Dell fan was not an option. The point was to the user that the fan may be working and just the sensor quit. If this was the case, you could live with it.
